What's the difference
What's the difference
What's the difference between 40,42 and 45 commando? and why? If you complete the training do you get to choose which 1 to go into? Finally are these the only 3 that you could end up in? or are there more?
I know nothing
Thanks

what am I a Librarian
Each one is a Commando unit, which help make up part of the Commando Brigade, which in turn helps to comprise the RMC (Royal Marines Corps). Yes there are other units, detachments, groups and establishments..........
Being obtuse - and no I am not sorry to sound it - get a copy of the organisation chart, heres a hint:
1. The RN/RM official site
2. A reasonably good book on the Corps - from the local library?
3. A leaflet from your nearest careers office
I regret to say that I continue to hold on to the slender conjecture that schools could at least teach how to find out something, even if they dont teach you anything else.

It seems my previous post struck an immediate chord, prompting a flash Tony:
Just in case any of you young people need clarification I am shouting:
My flash response was simple:Can't help but think that your last post in the above section was an effort to reply to and a dig for me to get of my arse and do some research
I have taken the liberty to copy both for the benefit of the wider audience, I hope Antelope does not hit me with breach of ..........Yup

I am (He) just doing things the new way, rather than read a book, I can get the info from guy's that are in or have been in the RM. Forums are one source I like to use.
But as I'm planning to join I've bought a couple of books to read up on the RM, so NO more silly questions will be posted on the site from me.

Antelope, I learnt many years ago to advise students, many of whom were extremely experienced professionals, that there is no such thing as a 'stupid question'. At least you have had the nous to try and find advice from a logical source. If you don't know, then ask for info or at least the direction in which to turn to find that info. I'd rather blush with a tad of embarrassment at my obvious lack of knowledge for a short period than stumble on wishing I'd had the balls to ask the question I wanted to. You can hear the gnashing of the Mutsters teeth from here, but don't worry they're plastic and come out when he has to suck his meat, especially stringy Antelope.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

Questioning Re search
Actually, I learnt a long time ago that asking a question where the answer might seem obvious (ie dumb arse questions) are frequently appreciated by the wider audience. A well phrase and thought out question illucidates an appropriate response. An illogical incoherent babble generally gets an appropriate response.
Yes it is the nitrogenous substance I am taking in the new way.
I will have you know that all my gnashers are my own, well except the two I lost down Union Street, but as they say...........
Does anyone know the song:
Perhaps he/she is just doing things the new way.

I don't think the questions I asked about the different divisions within the RM a dumb arse question. 2 someone like you who clearly seems to know everything by looking at your past postings maybe. But next time you don't know something what ever that may be, and you need the answer and you need to ask someone, just think to yourself is this a dumb arse question....
Not everyone knows everything, I prefer to ask questions then read books. Thats my preference.

Touchy.......
Antelope, your recent posts have confirm my first impression of you, glad I havent lost my touch. Now lets see where do I start:
Lets begin with your original queries.
1. Whats the difference - well without going into great diatribe about base locations, personal opinions, historic geographic and operational detail.
2. and Why - well without going into great diatribe .................
3. If you complete the training etc - this is clearly evident in various places throughout this forum and therefore not unreasonably ignored.
4. are there more -
I agree with Rob, Terry and Co you need to keep on right on asking, infact as Rob put it
My original response was based on the phrasing of the questions - which I would have expected to have been made by a snotty, freshed-faced school boy; however one element was suspect. The rapid PM suggested spotty as opposed to snotty.
Now to your recent post addressed to me, It is crystal that if you did read my previous you neglected to comprehend it. I did not say your questions were dumb arsed, I ascribed that elsewhere. What I did say was that a well presented question attracts am appropriate concise answer, a question that suggests it was plucked out of the air by a seven year old will attract a different appropriate response - surely even you can work that out.
I know that being perfectly modest, not everyone knows everything, nor is that a failing. Indeed it has been over 5 years since I left the Corps (You sprog Mutley) and I confess to knowing nothing about Cdo21 hence my question on another thread.
Whats the point, well we spend a large part of our lives flitting between asking and answering questions. But to get anywhere a greater part of our lives must be spent on research, which will mainly include reading.
Some also spend a fair portion taking the urine, smell the coffee - get use to it. If you cant take a bit of friendly criticism then best you go ubi saeva indignatio ulterius cor laceare nequit
Oh and by the way your babble about past postings is incomprehensible.
Glad to help old boy.

As the query was from someone who self confesses to knowing nothing this seemed a logical foundation. Each one is a Commando unit, which help make up part of the Commando Brigade, which in turn helps to comprise the RMC (Royal Marines Corps).

Please note the use of words like Commando, other units, detachments, groups and establishments - each very different and varied. (Oh and by the way not a single mention of divisions).Yes there are other units, detachments, groups and establishments..........
I agree with Rob, Terry and Co you need to keep on right on asking, infact as Rob put it
but wait didnt I suggest other alternatives, which unfortunately (for you at least) involve reading either on screen or in hard copy. At least my suggestion about careers office literature would have included some pictures for you. Ask away, but never sacrifice personal research.then ask for into or at least the direction in which to turn

JD,
I found your refined definitions interesting, but conflicting with my own (slightly dated) experience and the new official one:
On another point I have recently lost my signature icon, I have been into my profile and tried updating the link, and I even went in to a couple of recent posts to try and point them mannually but to no avail, any ideas?

I must get up to date on the Cdo21 concept, Harry has let me have some background gen - which I havent had time to absorb yet. But why the mix of Gp and Sect? The Brigade is structured on 3 lightly armed commando units (40 Commando in Taunton, 42 Commando in Plymouth and 45 Commando in Arbroath).

Mutley,
I did take into account your previous post about other sources to get info i.e. careers office, books etc
I can take any type of criticism even if my posts express different. I don't mind the criticism, I'll keep asking questions no matter how obvious the answer may be as long as get the answer.
Also I've noticed that you are a valuable source of information to someone "who knows nothing" and hope that amongst the criticism you'll give me the answer(s) I'm looking for.
