Schooling

Post by Joe_Canada »

Hello, just like to say first off that this board and site has been a great help to me. I had a question that I just couldn’t find the answer to anywhere else so I though I would give it a shot here and see if any one can help me. I have read the entry qualifications for Royal Marine Commando, but I am just no to sure about one thing, the level/grade of schooling required. On the official website I see a large section about schooling levels for Officers and the requirements for Commandos do not state any special levels for schooling. I also am asking this because I have received the application in the mail and it states that I have to submit with it educational certificates. Does this mean I should send them a report card? Are they looking for certain grade levels or a specific level of schooling here? I thank you for any advice you can give me concerning these matters. Do keep in mind I am Canadian and as such I am not fimilar with the maner that grades are given in England.

Joe.

Joe,
Judging by your post I dont reckon you have any problem insofar as your use of the English Language goes. It appears well spelt, more grammatically correct and better formed than many submitted on this forum. (No I am not having a pop at anyone, well not this time).

Whilst I cannot comment upon you overall academic successes to date, I do pick up from the manner in which your concerns are raised that you are not overly pleased with your scholastic endeavours. Do not dispair the Corps wants good all rounders with promise, schools rarely know how to bring that out. The Corps does.

There are eager little teams of civil servants in some dark dingy little office who will assess your academic attainment to date, and see if they meet 'the criteria'. If they do not, and you impress someone on the PRMC then it will not matter -

At the end of the day NAMET is alive and kicking so forget GCSEs and High School Diplomas - or the lack of them - truth is you only need English and Maths to get promoted before that its

English - grunting and groaning,

although you do need to be able to manage

Maths - Tup Threea.

Get in touch with your local consulate - honest they know, or they know someone who does (remember those little civil servants in there cave).

Good Luck

I found this on www.rmjobs.co.uk as you can see there are no entry requirements but I think some specialisations might require GCSE's (english exams or equivalent) at grade C or above in certain subjects

RM COMMANDO ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications: Must pass selection test (Reasoning, Literacy, Numeracy and Mechanical Comprehension), interview, medical examination and Potential Royal Marines Course (PRMC). Male Only.

The application form you need to fill out is the same as if you were applying for a job, they require info that sometines won't really be taken into account but they ask anyway.

Hope this helps buddy. 8)

There are no entry requirements for GCSE (or equivalent). Everyone joining will be given a NAMET assessment, either based on the education certificates you provide, or based on completion of a NAMET test paper, nothing scary it just assesses you. If you do not perform as well as expected, a Schoolie will help you through some tuition and you can resit. The Schoolie has experience coaching young adults, they do not churn out kids on demand.

Phil, sorry to disagree with you bud, but I think not, unless things have changed dramatically in the last 5 years. Almost all courses that have some learning requirement will have an aptitude test, and or a NAMET score requirement.

Whenever you need Edquals to progress your career the Corps, the schoolie will help you along. Hopefully the Corps learnt by its phopa in the 80's and is not hung up on education qualifications for qualification sake. You do as much as you like, when you like. For example, when I eventually decided I had better get some qualifications I did it on an as and when basis a bit here a bit there.

Unfortunately in Civvie street, irrespective of age, many employers still want to know what grades you got at school. Its 30 years since I left school so under school I always try and get away with RN/RM Education Service (Worldwide) and I put down my joining date and my TX date - being 24 years apart it always gives you something to talk about at interview. Then without dates,I list 5 o'levels, 2 diplomas and various other recognised qualifications.

But thats now in Civvie Street, not then - when I cannot recall needing a CV or filling in a 30 page application form, no just a C233 (general request form)......
Ahhhh area to avoid.......
