In the Royal Marines Reserve info leaflet it says that one of the specialisations that can be done is Swimmer canoeist. If this is true it means that there is in fact a way of joining special forces apart from committing yourself to a full military career first.

This has been bugging me, can anyone provide confirmation? Although come to think of it would make sense because the RMR are still Royal Marines Commandos and this is what SB recruit.

Cheers

Like the SAS the SBS have( or used to have) a reservist unit I guess you join the RMR and apply and I believe you can get attached to Poole for short periods.

There is an SAS reserve where you do not need to have served prior to aplication but im not sure on the SBS.

Yes, RMR personell can become SC rates.

To do so you must first pass out of initial training, which itself takes 12 months not including continuation training, which involves field firing, boat drills , training on GPMG and law ect, and can take quite a while.

Unlike 23 SAS selection, which I have been told does not requre recriuts to yomp at the same pace of thier regular counterparts (Buzz?), SBS R recruits have to reach the same physical standards.

As far as i`m aware SBS reservists are only trained in Green ops (reccies and OPs` ect,) as opposed to Black ops such as Maritime Counter Terrorism.

I daresay, if a reservist is of high enough standard he may, with appropriate training, integrate into the regular SBS.

I am not an SC rate, and most this information is based pureley on info gained from various oppo`s

R Sqn (23 SAS) prepare for selection as TA but do exactly the same SAS Selection course (At the same time as everyone else) there is or are no conscessions made in their favour...

Cheers for clearing that one Bulldog, Its reasuring to learn that there are no shortcuts to special forces. So those walter mitty types who got a little excited at the prospect of running around in all that "gucci black kit" after a few easy weekends can go back to reading Guns and Ammo whilst playing with themselves.

As long as you're not one of those people that you meet in pubs who say "I've done undercover things but I can't tell you about them"

(or one of the ones that take pictures of themselves in photo booths wearing a sand beret)
