Ahoy there!
Why, when I submit a post, is the time displayed one hour behind the actual time that I submitted my post? For example the time now is 0758hrs, but the time displayed will be 0658hrs.
Just wondered.

It could always be the disparity between the space time continuum.

On the face of it

Post by Mutley »

Steve,
Why should they, in the great time honoured tradition, all timings Zulu. Therefore, the old who, what when, where, whilst relevant, are non- confusing, as everyone will know when (in common) each message was posted.

We are currently in Alpha time, i.e. GMT+1, whereas H will soon be GMT+8, and our cousin Septic pretends to be GMT-7 (if my geography is correct). Poor old Andy O is about GMT-5, but worse of all is Rob P, what with Nursey interfering with his springs and wiv im be in Corenwal me ansum ee be in a zoan of is owne - tiz y he appens bout that there conti ume.

Prepare to be surprised, and likely as not pissed off. The good old GMT has been superceded for some while by a funny wee thing known in the business as UCT. Universal Clock Time, an atomic abomination of our old friend GMT, so for the sake of accuracy and our Euro friends it's now UCT. Sorry chaps.

Oh by the way...
Click on your Profile link up there and scroll down to the Timezone option. ;)

UTC Coordinated Universal Time, civil time, the one most often used by "ordinary" people.
UT Universal Time, based on the Earth's rotation, often used in Astronomy.
TAI International Atomic Time, based on atomic clocks.

And to confuse you even more.
UTC define the universal time zone, which all the other time zones are relative to. It observes no daylight saving time (summer time). UTC is sometimes adjusted with "leap seconds" so that the difference between UTC time and the Earth's rotational time does not exceed 0.9 seconds. The offset between UTC and TAI is always an integral number of seconds. The last leap second added to UTC was on December 31th 1998 at 23:59:60 UTC (the last minute of 1998 had one extra second). There will be no leap second in December 2002, but maybe in January 2003, it is not yet decided. :o

It's very very tempting to reply with words such as smartass and swot but that would be demeaning and very much a case of sour grapes considering the knowledge and erudition required to produce such accuracy. Ta for the clarification. :P

Lets face it Rob you were resisting the old

complex.
Jay, I thought I would spring into action as you forgot to impress us with your indepth knowledge of internet time (as devised by Swatch). I think in summary it divides the day into a thousand beats and has as far as I can tell no other use than knowing that I shall be going to lunch at 500.

No this is no wind up

In which case they'd be late and therefore on the flank by the time the team leader had gotten out of his pit.

My favourite has always been pussers transport time - now that is unique and its origins mythical, but then again so was the transport.
