Origin of "big hands, small maps" saying

Post by MrWorcester »

I am researching the saying "Big hands, small maps - that's the way to kill our chaps'.
Thus far I have got back to a book about the history of the King's Africa Rifles covering the Mau Mau uprising 1945-1960.
My research indicates that referring to people as 'chaps' peaked in 1920 and I am wondering if the first usage of the
saying was during the First World War, in the British trenches.
Can anyone help ?
