The Smoking Ban

Post by ali_hire »

Well for those of you who don't live in Scotland and Northern Ireland, we are 4 days away from what is possibly the least well thought out bit of legislation our government has ever come up with.

No more smoking in pubs, clubs, work cars/vans, workplaces (even if it's a designated smoking room) or pretty much anywhere inside apart from your own home.

The only benefit I can see is that I won't have to wash my clothes after every trip to the pub to get rid of the smell, which is a price that - given the flipside - I was more than willing to pay!

I think it's pretty good, now I can go places without the worries of the health risks.

Whether passive smoking causes health risks or not is a hotly debated issue in the science world.

Hundreds of the top scientist in the world have researched whether or not passive smoking can put your health at risk and all have come back with conflicting reports.

Personally I think if you give scientists enough time and money they could prove anything.

I think the ban is ridiculous. This topic has vbeen discussed before though and I'm not getting into it again.

I wont say much on this topic, I personally am not a smoker (never have or will) But people have been smoking for years in pubs, at the footy etc and I think it's madness, and I’m a non smoker!

My opinion on it is it's your choice to smoke or not smoke so why should the government tell you where you can and can't do it after all it's your money and health. As long as it's not near food and the smoker is considerate I see no problem.

It’s becoming more and more of a police state… they’ll ban drinking in pubs before you know it

That a typical socialist government for you, they know what's best. Just like when it comes to spending our tax money.

Argh! You're right lodgi, I wish I'd never started this now I'm just making myself angry!!!

I think it's a good idea becuase I'm a non-smoker who despises the smell/taste it leaves behind on clothes or anything for that matter. I'm pleased at the governments measures and hope it will reduce the amount of people who smoke in this country. Too many people take it up from peer pressure.

I think it's a bad idea because if I was a smoker I'd be outrgaed that I'm being controlled centrally and told where I can do something that is my choice in the first place. Especially after the already too heavy tax I'm paying on buying death sticks in the first place!

Neutral.

Im not too bothered, but im at least a little bit pleased its going to happen.Im a doorman and standing in a club all night really dosnt excite me as a lot of the time i come back stinking, and with a cough. Also, theres so many young people i know that seem to smoke just for the fact of looking 'cool' , and its blatently obvious with girls more than anyone,it might just make people realise that they dont need to be smoking all night.

Obviously people have the right, but at the end of the day the ban is only taking place inside a public place, most bars, clubs are providing outside areas for people to smoke.

Im a non-smoker and to be honest, I like it :D I hate the "its my right to smoke" people, what about the non-smokers right to have their smoke free health. As someone said before, all it takes is money to prove or disprove anything. Personally, I think passive smoking does cause health damage, burning things causes smoke, thats known to be dangerous, why would it be different because its a cigarette?

Some good points here stating the advantages of the smoking ban, all of which I totally agree with.

But where do I start with the negatives?

Revenue
£9.5billion was collected from taxation on tobacco in 2005, if the government got their way and everyone stopped smoking, where is this money going to come from? We will be taxed to buggery on anything we enjoy - alcohol and fuel will go through the roof and your income tax can expect to go up a fair whack as well. Would you really be happy paying £5 for a pint just so you can enjoy it in a smoke-free atmosphere?

Pubs/bars
The pubs are going to be hit hard by this. Many will shut down and the ones that can afford to stay open will be forced to raise their prices due to a loss in custom. Better make that £7.50 a pint then.

People will become more healthy
Over the course of a few generations yes this will be true. But the people who have been smoking 15, 20, 25 years have already done irreplaceable damage to themselves. Consequently the government will still have to pay to treat these people on the NHS but they will have £9.5billion less to do it with. I can see the taxpayer putting his hand in his pocket again here.

People will live longer in time
Very true. But who pays for their pension and healthcare for an extra 20 years? Can you see where I'm going with this???

Litter
Belgium has had the smoking ban in for a while now and a friend who recently returned from a weekend away there said that, outside every office block, the floors were littered with fag butts. In time residents will complain, the local councils will have to take action and our council tax will go up.

In hindsight I think I'm happier to just replace my clothes a bit more frequently.

(BTW I am and always have been a non-smoker)

This law has already been passed over here in NZ and everyone was freaking out during the talking about it process. But now that its passed no one really gives a flying f***. The smokers pop outside to a sheltered 'smoking garden' and have a quick smoke while everyone who doesnt want to smoke or suck in passive smoke just stay inside.

I really think that everyone is flapping over something that wont have such a big impact that you all think it will. Everyone who wants to smoke will still smoke, bars and pubs will just have a covered area for smokers outside with a couple of those outdoor heaters going.

Re Ali_hire, with your negative points, you seem to be answering a complete ban on smoking, as in no more smoking and that cigarets just dont exist anymore.
I truely beleive that anyone who smokes now wont stop smoking because they have to walk 15ft to a door to outside to have a smoke.

Cheers

Cant agree with that. One of the local pubs in my area reported an increase in profit after a mere week of introducing the smoking ban early to their pub. They suggested pubs begin it as soon as possible.
