I agree Wholley. For me it was the logical choice. I'm going to say something now that might sound a bit harsh but true, so please people don't jump down my throat about it.

Here goes:
In my day early 80s the academic qualifications for entering a police force in the UK were a lot higher than the academic qualifications for becoming an infantry soldier or any soldier for that matter that wasn't going to be learning a technical/mechanical/medical trade.

And the academic qualifications of the average soldier back then were extremely low and not sufficient for subsequent employment by a police force.

This topic has rolled over into other threads.
Without making this a love fest it's the same in the US.
Academic standards for a Police officer are much higher than that of a GI.
Physical standards are also a lot higher.
Basic Law Enforcement Training(BLET)is Federally mandated these days and it's no walk in the park.

1960 Colonial Police minimum 8 x 'O' Levels.
Alternatively 4x O + 2 x A or a recognized and
confirmed commission in the Armed Forces.The
minimum entry age was 19 with maximum of 28.
Graduate entry received extra salary.

Once knew a lad who wanted to be RM Officer and was told to "come back later" by the AIB "when you have more leadership potential" So off he goes and joins Hong Kong Bill. Four years later, chokey wife in tow, he returns. Passes second AIB (just to satisfy his curiousity ) and declines as they had their chance four years previous. Old Bill ever since and very happy with it

Lucky break really as the manager was an ex South African Police officer. He just took me under his wing as he knew ex Infantry have a hard time in Civvie street. Gravey ever since and man did I bugger up some plant.
