I think that any one from oversea's that does long stretch in our forces should be offered the right of citizenship. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that a non-UK national who has served 5 years in HM Armed Forces has the same entitlement as any other foreign national who has legall...

Ex-URNU-Student, In reply to your question about standards falling, I'd have to say no thay wouldn't. For every recruit vacancy slot, there are literally a couple of thousand hopefuls. Becoming a recruit in the British Gurkhas is like winning the lottery. In order to cull the crowd, the selection pr...

may18, There is actually more to this than meets the eye. The UK is obliged to return the Gurkhas to the place of their recruitment by treaty. This, along with stipulations regarding pay and pensions, was dictated under the Tripartite Agreement of 1947. The agreement between Britain, India and Nepal...

There was once a body called the Emergency Reserves, which functioned in much the same way as the Regular Reserves, i.e. trained soldiers ready to be mobilised on individual basis to augment regular units. In the mid-late 1960's this was combined with the TA under the unwieldy title Territorial Army...

Jpb, You're right, it was a very unreported conflict. Sad to say the world is full of them. I'd wager that mentioning the Battle of At Tiri in any Irish High St. today would draw blank looks, which is a pity given the sacrifices of the Irish Army there. As well as Robert Fisk, Thomas Friedman's &quo...

I think it was Bismarck who first decreed that invading Russia would always be an open-ended, expensive and ultimately futile venture. He steered his foreign policy accordingly.

Redhand, I covered Beirut very briefly during the early 1990's and have many friends in the press corps who were there throughout the civil war. What exactly is it that youo want to know? I'll try to write up a basic summary of the recent civil war for you but it will take a while. If there is anyth...

Thanks and regards!

Biltong? These people are expecting a full on braaivleis! Don't they know that it rains during our summer? Other than that they fit right in, as Maidenhead is crawling with South African exiles and back-packers. They even have a store here that caters to their home-sickness (named inventively enough...
