Anyone know what the training at Sandhurst consists of? Pretty much what you'd expect: PT, weapons training, exercises, academic studies (war studies, defence & international affairs, comms & management studies), drill etc... Plus the usual: getting messed around, lack of sleep, hurry up an...

Have to say I agree with the ban on burkhas (burqas?). Choice and freedom of expression is all well and good, but the burkha is oppressive and many muslim women are simply afraid to say so. It is also a very good way of hiding the signs of domestic abuse that many muslim women suffer from. Mike made...

My thoughts, if you ironed your kit, polished your shoes, put your beret on and held yourself in a smart manner you might not get mistaken for a civvy security guard!! Well said mate. Far too much of the RAF appear as civvies in uniform. The RAF Regiment, from my (limited) experience, are the excep...

Doc, Your post at 1138hrs (i.e. the long one, not going to quote it 'cos it's too long) should really, really be sent in to a national paper. It is an excellent counter argument to all the crap that is being spouted by the press at the moment. Please do it mate. As an aside, I'm a wannabe Marine and...

Did you know that everyone in the RAF has also just been issued a blue daysac with RAF logo? Saw people bimbling about with these at Cranwell a while ago. I thought that they looked rather cheap and a bit gay to be honest! Am I allowed to say that? Think the RAF 'name tags' on CS95 look pret...

Chappy/Jeb/Klink? Steve Preece answered that on the Once a Marine... site: The book cover was the best of a choice of 3. They don't spend much money on designing book covers and this one sort of shows a marine leaving the corps for the last time. It starts right were my last book finished. Hope this...

I'm about 3/4 of the way through 'Always a Marine' at the moment. While not the best written book I've ever read (though I doubt I could do better) I've found it to be very gripping and difficult to put down (cue joke by Doc re: glue on the cover  ). The surprising thing I found was that despi...

If you come across a copy, buy it. It's really worth it. I can't reccoment this book enough. The copy I've got dates back to the 1930s I think. My dad bought it in a second-hand book shop when he was a kid.

The Paras series was quality. The best bit has got to be when the recruits were doing a tab, the Platoon Sgt is running alongside one of them and encouraging him. The recruit is then overtaken by another recruit. At this the Sgt explodes "You're getting beaten by a Jock! A Jock! We built a wall...

Absolutely excellent book. I bought it on the off-chance that it might be good and then had trouble putting it down. Basically it's Murray's diary of his time in the Legion, from 1960-1965. What I found most interesting about it was the way he documents how he changes as a person during his time in ...

Sorry to hear this, a tragedy indeed. RIP Royal.

Last time I did the Ring of Steall we had to turn back after one of my mates fell & nearly died. It's easily done.
