People, what are you opinions of this rifle?

Would you choose one over an sa80?

I doubt you'll get much response given that only the French use it (apart form a few US civilians :) ). This site has some information; http://www.world.guns.ru/assault/as21-e.htm .

Overall though, it seems to be a pretty standard bullpup; accurate, ambidextrous with modification, reliable and not as modular as many conventional weapons. It's difficult to say much without experience though :).

I would take anything over that piece of crap - only someone who has never taken that weapon into the field would thing it as effective.

Crap, this is my weapon of choice

I have heard that this new FN is really quite good,

although in all honesty I haven never gotten to play with it.

Personaly I think it looks cool but other than that whos to say? not me.

Chapps, given the choice what would you choose as Britains next infantry rifle? I've heard a few good things about the SA80 but most of what I've heard would describe it as bull s**t rather than a bull pup.

The French didn't like the look of it when it was issued, they nicknamed it ' le clarion' - the bugle. :D

True enough, but you also need to have some faith in it working. If the French derided the FA MAS when it was introduced then perhaps its look didn’t inspire much faith in its ability to do the job. On the other hand the SA80 has been slammed so much I doubt anyone has much faith in it, no matter how good it may really be.

Well SA80-2 Has now been well tested in a number of battlefield conditions
and it is now a first class weapon. Has the French weapon been tested under battlefield conditions, until you have had to rely on a weapon under fire I would not be to keen on changing one that I knew now worked well, for One I didn't know.

I've yet to hear anything negative about the SA80 A2s performance in Iraq.

Give me an SLR anyday! Not that I've fired one, mind you. I just got made to clean some. But it felt so right when I was playing Rambo by myself!

NO experience of the SA80 in any version. The AR 15 was a handy weapon in the jungle and far better than the Sterling we manpacking people used to carry before it. That said give me the SLR, solid and felt as though it was doing the business, you could demolish walls with that thing, I rated it highly.

SLR jolly good and squaddy proof. Don't know if Royal used to use them but as Corps men we had the LMG, a magazine fed (30 rounds) light machine gun 7.62mm. Heavy it may have been but most excellent bit of kit.

Infantry guys who were not familar with it (they used GPMG) thought it a useful weapon when they had the opportunity to fire it.
