Questions about weapons during American Revolution

I am an overseas student studying in Australia, and I am doing a research about how the way that soldiers fought adapted to the use of automatic firearms.

However, unfortunately, I know very little real military knowledge. I tried to use Google but I found that I even didn't know what key words I shall use!

The plan is that to use comparison of the modes of military operations during American Revolution and after WWI. I've got some training manual of the U.S. Army. So could you kind people give any information about the weapons they used in American Revolution? And the way they fought as well? (like did they line up in open field to shoot? or they operated separately and took cover to avoid being shot?)

Thank you~ You are my only hope! :)
