New SF regiment, what would this mean to the SAS recruitment

Hi guys,

With the military wishing to create a large special force which is not up to SAS/SBS standards, similer to the Pathfinders i imagine. would this not put further pressure on SAS/SBS recruitment as many servicemen would be content with this new regiment?

The whole of 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment along with a company of RM are SFSG. As nearly 70% of the SAS come from the Parachute Regiment I don't think it will make difference

my thinking is that if a new regiment is formed that does the same sort of thing as the SAS/SBS then they will just stay and not attempt selection.

eg. Green Berets(new SF unit) to Delta Force(SAS/SBS)
if you made it into the Green Berets how many would try out for the Delta.

Why would they form a new Regiment when what they have works well

well from what i understand is that the SAS/SBS is having trouble getting enough men, so theyre thinking about creating a lesser SF regiment to do missions too difficult for regular regiments and not needing the expertise of the SAS/SBS (like the Pathfinders). there by freeing up them for more important missions

Ares how can they create a SF Regiment when they already have SFSG which back up the SAS and cover many of the smaller jobs that don't need their level of attention. Also as I said 70% of the SAS come from the Parachute Regiment and if they are tied up as SFSG then there recruitment is going to drop.

The RM and Para Regt are already up to 2nd tier SF why create another Regiment? Just take them out of the Army Orbat and put them under DSF.

Don't forget that you also have the SRR very capable in their own right...

Very true. SAS, SBS, SRR are all great SF ( Best in the World :D )and the SFSG is great Tier 2 SF, cross between the Green Berets and US Army Rangers .

I read in an Andy McNab book (or Chris Ryan, one or the other) that it takes something like £5,000-£10,000 (could of been £50,000) to train a single SAS Trooper. Why create all these regiments, make regular's redundant and spend all this money on SAS troopers that are just training all day and not making any difference when they are perfectly able to do any mission?

it costs £19,000 to train a Regular Basic Soldier, so to Train an SAS it's going to be allot more, the cost of Training isn't the reason Soldiers are being made Redundant, don't believe everything you read in a book either.

It cost some thing like £3.000 to train a paratrooper back in the 1950's and I have heard quoted one million to train a soldier in the SAS.
