Hi just after a bit of advice please.

Im 23 and have never been in the army or ever had anything to do with anything like that as ive been out of shape and been doing other things....

Im wanting to know how to join the EOD, ive been told i have to join the royal engineers to become one, but im a bricklayer already so could this help getting me through or would i have to do something different?

Oh and how do you choose what regiment to go in like i think it said 101 royal engineers and a london based eod unit, but im just not sure what happens with regiments and things like that.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi, im not 100% certain, but i think to join EOD, yes you do have to go Royal Engineers, but you will have to join as an ammunition technician. If you are good enough they might assign you to an EOD unit but you wont be disarming bombs, and IED's. For that you will need to be an ATO (an officer trained at sandhurst). You would be helping him really, as part of a small team, making sure he has all the equipment he needs.
If you werent good enough however, and you wouldnt know until finishing training, you are more likely to be assigned a job in the armoury counting and handing out all the ammo to soldiers going on the ranges. Thats the real life of most ammo techs as i understand it.

Being a bricky wouldnt really help you either i dont think. Best thing to do is go to your local careers office and have a proper chat with a recruiter who will give you all the best info.

EOD are part of the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC), Pop into your Local Armed Forces Careers office and ask for Info! You do not have to commit to anything, just ask for any written info packs and thats it.

You do not need to have a commission (be and Officer) to be a Bomb Doctor, but you will need to select the trade and pass the trade exams of Ammunition Technician, and work your way through the ranks to SSgt or above and have the necessary nervous and intelligence. You may not get to chose which regiment you get posted to, postings are on vacancies only and you go where the next available slot is.

Hi mpez, glad to hear your on the mend buddy. It may be that you will be Medically Discharged unless you are offered the chance to retrade. It all depends on what your specialist Col says to you in August.

If you can't get to full fitness (Infantry - Fit as butchers dogs) then it will be very unlikely that you will return to your Regt or Bn buddy.

Have you had a look at retrading, if you suggest it first then its always good to look keen and get a little knowledge of the Corps you want to retrade too.
