I am very much interested in joining the British Army (preferable a cadetship), and am living in the Republic of Ireland. Obviously, remaining living here I cannot join , for obvious reasons.
If I were to move to England, would I be eligable to apply for the army?

The Irish army would have been a possibility if it wasnt such a boring and neutral army

Its what allows you to go straight to being an officer?

i remember a logistics lad at Bulford who was from Cork. I don't know all the ins and outs of how he got in or of his vetting.

I think the best thing you can do is get in touch with the recruiters.

My vetting took longer than usual due to my parents being from the republic. I got in though and handled documents with a "secret" stamp on them whilst in the Signals.

Hmm I just put an unneccessary word on officer recruitment then, its referred to as cadetship in the Irish army, my bad:)

You'd want to get your skates on, things start happening mid summer. I am from ROI also, contact Portadown AFCO. Good team up there, you'll have application form sent out by post, takes some time to fill out, soon as it arrives ring AFCO and book a BARB test that way you can fill out application form in the space you have waiting for BARB test.

After receiving results of BARB you be given a printed read out to show which jobs are applicable to you, because your Irish recruitment officer will suggest go for Irish type jobs, Royal Irish Regiment, Irish Guards, you'll be more comfortable there for duration. Do some job choice homework before you go, you'll be asked to take preference on 3 jobs, most cases you'll make it into 1st chosen job.

I'm at written Med stage, should hear news over next week or so, once cleared its onto interview 2 and 3 on same day, if passed I go onto selection hopefully soon after, then its a bit of wait before starting basic training.

Go up to Portadown by train and keep all your train tickets, if you make it through, all your travel costs will be reimbursed. The application process is a long process so be patient, things wont happen over night, any medical issues and you'll be ruled out soon enough.

Thanks a million for the info, i'll get right on it. At the moment i'm preparing to sit my Leaving Cert, so i'm going to wait until next year to apply, just gathering information now and trying to get fit!

No bother, forgot to mention, bring your birth cert to local Garda station and have them fill out a vetting form, takes a few weeks before Garda get up from their lazy holes and complete the form, once complete vetting details will be sent out to you via post. You'll need vetting done along with RG8 written medical, if you can get all this sorted now things will go more swift after you finish school.

Another thing to track down is your vaccination history, part of RG8 written medical, you seem young enough so should have no bother, talk to your GP and see have you vaccination history on GP file, if not try and obtain some records through HSE, GP can scan them onto your file, all medical info required for RG8 will be on GP's file, all ready for filling out RG8.

Take a visit to dentist and have a check up, anything that needs doing, have it done.

You don't want to give the army any reasons to defer you, go to GP to check out obvious stuff while your waiting like BMI, blood pressure, eyes, ears, teeth, lungs, heart murmur etc that way you'll be saved from any grief later on.
