My names Joe, I am hopefully joining the Royal Signals as a Communication Systems Engineer. I have selection on 8th July and I was just wondering how you guys will think I will do.

I can do my 1.5 mile in about 10:15, hopefully i can do it in under 10 mins by selection.

I can do about 60 pressups in 2 mins and about 70 sit ups.

I can do about 5 full chin ups.

I'm also wondering about Martial Arts in the army, I know theres alot of boxing in the army, but what else is available to me? Is Mixed Martial Arts established in the army yet?

Although not the main reason I joined, I thought the army would be a great place to kickstart my MMA career. Surely I would be allowed to compete right? Even if I had to train like boxing, judo etc. seperately?

No i am not kidding and officially no you cant compete, i see you are from Leyburn, i have a few friends from there who do a bit MMA

Just out of pure interest, as I know you'll know the answer, why such a definate no Sandy?

The forces are massive on so many sports, why is not on MMA?

Whilst not being an expert or even a novice, from the limited unarmed combat I have done with the RMR I got the impression that it was a combination of various forms of discipline. Whilst thats not MMA by any means, I just wondered why there was no chance of training/competing in MMA within the Army?

Yeah the recruiters were banging on about how the army fully supports and encourages you to go big in sport. I asked about MMA and they said the army would be the best place if you want to kickstart my career. Although I think the recruiter was unaware of what MMA is, it is still very annoying as I had high hopes for the army helping me out. Sounds stupid but my dream is to become a top Mixed Martial Artist some day and I would like to put in all the effort I need to but it is annoying to think that I would have to leave my career in the army if I even wanted to start progressing.

If you look at the sports the army is massive on they are all olympic sports and what do you think the chances of mma becoming an olympic sport is

Speaking of MMA, did anyone watch the Ultimate Fighter Finale at the weekend?

What an excellent result for British MMA all the lads really did us proud, especially when Dimarcus got his arse handed to him!

Now all we need if for Bisping to destroy Dan Henderson at UFC 100 and it'll have been a complete white wash for the Yanks

But fight of the night definitely went to Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida!

Shame there's not more MMA on tv as its a really entertaining sport and far more competitive than boxing is these days.

There's a new British MMA show coming to Bravo soon, shame I only have freeview though.

Oh well, I've never seen Dan Henderson fight so I'd no idea of how likely it would be............. but hey anything can happen lol

I guess I'll be needing to cross my toes as well as my fingers for Bisping then??

If you want to carry on training MMA while in the army you could find a local club where your based and train in your own free time.

In regards to competing in your free time I don't know what the Army's policy is on that but maybe Sandy could enlighten me?

Officially you cant compete but i never had any dramas apart from 1 tool who used too say stitches, black eyes was unsightly.

No matter what state i was in after a fight i always did my job the next day.

I'd certainly like Bisping to win but if Dan Henderson gets him on the grounds he is pretty much done. Good luck Bisping anyway, he is still the younger fighter.

I guess I could be pretty possible to train and fight out of work hours, I don't see how they could stop you doing it anyway, it's a perfectly legal and safe sport (compared to Boxing, Rugby ect.) as long as it wouldn't affect my work.
