im interested in becoming a sniper in the marines and have a few questions:

do snipers get paid more than a general soldier of thier rank?
can snipers be promoted to sargeant?
do snipers serve on their own or still with thier troop or just with a spotter?
can you join as a sniper straight away?
do snipers have a better chance of joining the sas or sbs?

Are you already a Royal Marine?

From the sounds of things I've got a strange hunch that you are not (not sure why I think that)

Anyway why not focus on getting in and earning your green Lid before you look to join the snipping ninja brigade.

Nothing wrong with aiming high, just one step at a time.

As stokey said calm down and focus on getting in first mate. But to answer some of your questions

I think they get more pay but not 100%

Ranks and advancement has got nothing to do with specializations, so yeah sergeants can become Snipers.

No you can't join as a sniper straight away, you have to be a Rifleman for a while first and get experiance. No one want a in experianced Sniper on the field.

Technically they don't have a better chance but the skills you learn on the Sniper course like Map Reading and the better fitness would help.

You've just got to be a booty looking for a bite :drinking:
First answer is that it's Royal Marines unless of course you're talking about the USMC

If it's a bite then nice one, if you're genuine then good luck.
Google PRMC, talk to like minded guys on an official RM site.

do snipers get paid more than a general soldier of thier rank? NO you are a GD Marine with an additional training.

can snipers be promoted to sargeant? You can be promoted, but it has nothing to do with you being a Sniper.

do snipers serve on their own or still with thier troop or just with a spotter? You are part of a troop and you will be employed as such, when you do you will work with a spotter (usually another Sniper)

can you join as a sniper straight away? NO

do snipers have a better chance of joining the sas or sbs?
NO

Well that saves me the hassle...

What happened to that big 'Search' picture mods used to post for such frequently asked questions a few years back?

And what is it with people thinking they can join the forces and it'll be just like the films? Tomovyick, why do you want to be a sniper?

Druadan, I see what you're getting at mate and I pretty much agree with you. The problem is film and TV are where most of the public get there information about the military so you can't really have a go at people for asking bone questions. If all I'd seen about being a sniper was what I'd seen in films and on youtube I'd probably think it was a pretty cool job too, know what I mean?

I get your point mate, and don't generally have a problem with people asking bone questions; a little over five years ago I was on here asking them after all (which is pretty much the only reason I still pop in here, given the downhill slide of the forum). BUT there is a limit; the questions posed in this thread show a complete lack of even an inkling of research on Tomo's behalf.

Working nights so need something to pass the time..as AA said a lot of people only see what they think is the "glamorous" side of Military life, and think that training is just a minor complication on their route to being "Rambo".

Like many on here I despair at the way some fail to even try and do some research into what could be a life changing career choice.
