Well done munky. That`s the most in-depth review of the current situation ref matelots from the Isle of Man, I`ve heard all day.

you expected me to discuss the ins and outs of a revolution in naval architecture whilst hungover...? you're a cruel taskmaster indeed

but come on; everything i've seen on the subject seems to indicate that trimarans make a lot of sense, especially in terms of stability and survivability. but i've not seen any downsides to them either, since there's not a lot out there apart from triton's PR. so could anyone here balance up the argument...?

Munky you make a good point about there not being any trimarans out there, which is strange as indeed the trimaran would seem to provide a better platform in the frigate/destroyer type role.

The only thing that springs to mind is cost. I presume that due to the extra number hulls required to build a trimaran it would be more costly than building a single hull. Also the production facilities for such a warship would have to be built from scratch, as well as new dry-docks etc.

On another note it is interesting that the US is also evaluating the Triton type trimaran design, it wouldn't surprise me if a joint UK/US design would be on the cards for a trimaran based FSC, it would certainly offset the costs for a new ship design.

someone correct me if i`m wrong, but wasn`t there a catamaran on trials a few years back for the Royal Navy? it was going to be the new frigate, and i think it was made of plastics, so it didn`t attract mines etc. If I remember correctly, it was on the RN web page or navy news

http://www.navynews.co.uk/articles/2002 ... 052001.asp

http://www.navynews.co.uk/articles/2000 ... 120104.asp

there IS, a demonstrator trimaran frigate built,(RV Triton)and is a two thirds scale prototype which could replace the type 22 and 23 frigates. built by vosper thorneycroft, for the ministry of defence`s evaluation and research agency.

http://www.nelmes.fsnet.co.uk/paxman/applics1.htm

the relevant section is about two thirds of the way down the page

also, check out the Aussie/us of a joint venture
