Stitches can be many of things, mainly muscles cramping due to a lack of salt in the diet, try not to run after eating, leave it an hour or so, eat somthing with a lil bit of salt in it, smoking yea it doesn't help not an issue tho, i know paras who smoke alot but can still perform.
If you get a sitch (depending on the location) breath in slightly, so that you're lungs are expanded but youre still able to breath, then press with two fingers (strait) abouve the area of pain when you do this Exhale a large amount of air slowly, thisi s so you don't ruin you're pace.
Tell me how you're next run goes.

A pace of 4-5 times walking speed could be pretty fast over long distances (well it certainly would be if you took my walking pace!).
Don't forget sometimes it may not feel like you're going as fast as you should be cause most people associate running fast with all our sprints but over long distance it's not possible for most people to do that. (unless your a world class runner who can do 5 min miles over a marathon!

)
What time did you do that 9mile run in? That would give us a better idea of whether your paces is too slow or not if you knew that.

That kind of pace is fine, you shouldn't have any problems with the runs when you start your training.
Everyone doubts themselves before they start basic but you seem to be in good shape so just have confidence in yourself, don't psych yourself out before you even start.
Three words for you to memorise
Positive Mental Attitude.

Alright, took me exactly an hour and 7 mins - resulting in an over all 7:40/mile ratio.
That breathing regime worked perfectly Jstagg :]
And yea - Alfa - you'r right on the buck in regards to the "speed" thing.. it feels like im going alot slower for sure.
Fantastic mate!!, glad i could help you out, good idea building the ab muscles helps alot.. tho i got a tiny bit of chub when i run i can blatently feal the better for having that muscle under it... (i was once a toned boy. hahah)

Just wondering thru and saw this! Theres many myths about what a stitch actually is and i asure you it isnt muscle cramping! What actually happens is there is 2 linings in the stomach and a stitch is when these two linings meet and rub together because the fluid that keeps them apart isnt there
Its kinda hard to explain without diagrams but thats the easy way to explain!

The stitch is 100% on the left side of my body, just below the rib cage, pretty sure thats where the diaphragm is located, so it must be down to my breathing. That or the lack of muscles in that general area - recently started a pretty intensive abdominal workout that lasts on average for 6 mins, hopefully that will be a solution in the long run :]
Also cancel that Ab workout because doing sit ups, or any ab exercise does not build muscle or make the muscles stronger or grow! Its a waste of your time you could do a 1000 every hour and all that will happen is the fibres that make it look like you have 6 muscles will tighten! If anybody wants to actually see a 6pak etc its already there you just need your body fat to be below 4%
