Hi there,

Im 27, currently working in advertising and am looking to join the RAF as an Air Traffic Control officer or ICT specialist. Do you know if you say fail at OASC can you then apply for a lower ranked position? I am looking to join in 6 to 10 months and have started to prepare myself by training and also brushing up on current affairs and mental arithmetics. What else do you think i will need to start preparing for? I am still thinking fully about whether this is the right decision to make, i have always wanted to join and almost did at 18 and have regretted not having done so. I know its not just a job, its a life and need to think thoroughly and carefully. Did anyone go through this phase when they joined the forces? I'd be very grateful if you could give me a slight insight to you day to day life in the forces or anything that i really need to consider etc.

Sorry for the long winded post. Many thanks for all your help and advice! :)

Hi again,

I'd imagine that, say you applied for Pilot and didn't cut the mustard at OASC, they will tell you to come back in a years time and try again, or maybe offer you other Officer/Aircrew roles available to you with a lower aptitude score required, i.e Admin/Supply.
They won't offer you ground trades like you might be thinking with the ICT Specialist trade.

I am an ICT Specialist, so if you have any questions about it feel free to fire away. We work with ATC closely, repairing and maintaining all the comms/nav aids so get to see what their job entails.

Regards

Alex
