Press-ups and pull-ups.

Hey everyone, just a quick few questions -

I'm very interested in joining the Royal Marines, I'm going for the gym 1.5 mile test soon and hope to be down doing my prmc asap.

The only thing that will really fail me in training is press-ups and pull-ups because a while ago I broke my shoulder and stopped doing pretty much all forms of exercise. I've been training for the best part of 2 months now, pushing myself pretty hard in all aspects of training (running, and all general circuit work, weights etc) but I'm still hopeless at press-ups and pull-ups. I'm fine with running and situps as such, just seems my upper body strength is letting me down when it comes to holding my body weight. Any tips or pointers on how to sort it out other than just keep doing them? I don't really fancy going down to PRMC and getting bollocked because I can't do basic press-ups. Thanks!

Practise makes perfect. Try doing max before bed and first thing in the morning. I started at 10 and slowly made my way up. Make sure you do them slowly and extend your arms properly when you're up and that your chest almost touches the floor when you're down. And keep your head up so you're looking at the wall and your back should be straight. That's about it, the rest is up to you!

The only thing that will get you doing more of them, is doing more of them. As Just_Me has said, doing your max on a morning is a good start, or if you are doing sets at the gym alongside your normal circuit work, try doing the largest set in the middle.
For example, start low and do 10 reps, then 15, then 10 again. Same system with pull ups. I was advised to do this recently and have seen big improvements from when I was doing biggest set first and less each time.

Keep trying!

Don't repeat posts please. You wacked this up on the RM threads as well.

Sorry mate, I realised that thread was old - trying to get info as quick as possible, I go for my gym & health check soon, so PRMC isn't far away.
