Hi, I've downloaded the bleep test from the Royal Marines website and put it on my I-pod.
The problem is I don't know the distance to run, and when to get to the other end. Do you have to get to the other end before you hear the bleep??
Thanks in advance

The distance is 20m, not 25 as some will say, 20.
I used one of those DIY tapes to measure it out, used to do it anywhere flat as practice makes a big difference with the bleep test as there is a definate technique and confidence aspect to it.
In CTC you have to get to the line on the beep. The PTI's notice everything btw. Bets tip I can give you is to conserve your energy, if your not used to it you'll do shit the first time. Hit the lines on the beeps, even if in the early stages you can walk it and make it, as in, dont waste energy getting there before it bleeps and then waiting.

Having a goal in your mind is the key to doing well on the bleep test in my opinion. Try aiming for a whole number. I figure if I'm at 12.6 or whatever I might aswell just push it that little extra for 13.

When I do the bleep test I find the best option (for me anyway) is to try and conserve as much energy as possible... I personally focus on my stride length, control my breathing and try and stay relaxed keeping movement to a minimum.
Probably doesn't make a great difference but mentally it just gives you something to take your mind of the struggle.
As said practice makes perfect

I have also read on mfat that alternating leg plants is a large benefit come level 12-14

Indeed it does. Alternate plants everytime otherwise you'll start getting leg pains in just one leg. Also, don't think of it as "planting" your leg... This puts alot of stress on it, try and do a REALLY small diameter corner instead so that you're not constantly putting alot of pressure on your legs to stop and start again.
