Just watched this all the way through, really interesting. Was filmed in 2000 and examines the Royal Marine's training methods and asks if they are suitable for todays 'generation'.

I hope it doesn't develop into a "it was harder in our day" argument. What the Officer at the beginning has to to say is really interesting and I personally think he makes a lot of sense. From what he says, I don't think he is tryng to make training easier or just trying to pass as many people as possible.

Anyway, everyone is entitled to ther opinion so lets see what you have to say!

Cheers for posting that Dave. Great to see Maj Walls there, I did a climbing expedition with him when he was a Capt in the M&AW Cadre. Hope he's still in; definitely one of the most impressive officers I came across - and chilled out (for an ML) but probably not one to get on the wrong side of. Your dad might know Tommo (the troop stripey) - he was a signaller before he became a PW - that was before my time but I knew a few of his signaller buddies (if he would ever admit to such a thing).

It was a controversial programme at the time amongst serving and former bootnecks with many thinking that the end of CTC as an uncompromising training establishment was nigh. Since then lads produced by the newer system (if it can be described like that) have been getting amongst it in all kinds of hot spots and making us proud so it can't be too bad.

Interesting what the officer says at the start. Three people died there and one lad shot himself while I was there in '92.

"Colours Thomson" was big mates with our troop Sgt as well when I was there two years ago. He seemed a lot more chilled out than what he is in this programme.

Actually thanks to whoever added those videos it was a real eye opener and I can honestly say that at least from an early training point of view it seemed much harsher then. That Corporal blatantly seeing that recruit off on camera was harsh.

Hi, I'm considering joining the Royals and have just watched the videos in this thread - which are very interesting. To the guys who have recently passed out, how does todays basic training compare to that seen in the videos?

Cheers,
C
