This question is for anyone that has had the eye exam lately. What exactly do they do for the exam ?. Someone told me when they went for theirs, they squirt a dye in your eyes to check to see if they are healthy. Is this true ??.

Not if it's just a standard eye examination they don't. An optician can usually tell whether or not your eyes are healthy simply by shining a light in your eye. I would imagine that a dye would only be necessary if they were carrying out an investigation into more serious problems.

think it depends on the individual optician,because i had dye squirted in my eyes!

lol, not quite mate . I think they do it, to see if you've had lazer surgery, not sure though. Anyone with any answers ?. I live in Canada, so I can't march down to the local AFCO lol.

Yeah, it's to see if you have had laser eye surgery.

Bollocks! It's not to see if you've had laser surgery, I've had that dye put in my eyes as well as various other drops and my optician already knew I hadn't had laser surgery. This wasn't for any medical or such like, I used to see a specialist optician and had that dye put in my eyes every few weeks, can't remember what it's for but it's not to see if you've had laser surgery.

There's too many people that come on here and think hmmmm, that sounds good so it must be right, too much false info gets pumped into this site by people that don't know sh*te!

Here it says the dye is used to see if there is any damage on your conera (the white part of your eye). It tests to see if there is any damage from UV lights such as direct sunlight, lightning etc. Normally the conera will heal itself in a couple of days but can become infected, the usual routine is antibiotics or a dressing.

The test to see if you have any damage/infection is to put orange dye in your eye(s). A special blue light is used to show up any damage.

Anyway, read the PDF file for more, pretty good, explains a bit about UV damage to your eyes in easy to read bullet points. Feel free to correct me or whatever, hope it helps.

Wow, thanks davidemmerson. I never knew that. I have had lazer eye surgery, and I know I SHOULD tell them, otherwise I can be immediately kicked out for withholding information, but I don't want to be rejected on those grounds. I now have 20 / 20 vision, with no problems at all.

Ty, i'd do exactly as you say, but that's just me personally. I would not tell them about it ither, it maybe wrong, but I wouldn't risk it, seen too many people on here go the honest wy and end up havin problems or not even being allowed to join atall.

Oh and as for the dye in the eyes, I reckon dave summed it up pretty well.

Don't worry about it danslark, they may also use dyes for different puposes, this is possibly just one method. But I thinks its the only method they use dyes for. Of course, if you prove me wrong, I stand corrected. Glad to be of help.

I have had my eyes lasered. My experience of the eye exam was that the optician could tell straight away that they had been done. He looked on the form he had to fill out and said "Theres nothing about it on the form so I won't mention it".

Happy days.

My AFCO had no idea my eyes had been lasered, and its not on my medical records. But be under no illusion, any optician can tell if you've "been done".

Thanks for that max, and the rest of you mates. So the optician let you through ?. hmm, I guess it would depend on the optician. Did he ask you ahead of time, and did you say no ?. Im afraid of saying no then have him seeing the scar in the eye and failing me for lying to him.

It's a real pain. I got the surgery done for the purpose of joining. Would hate to fly from Canada and then be failed on dumb grounds like that.
