From what I've heard the process of gaining a commission with the Royal Gurkha Rifles is the same as any regiment. Gaining sponsorship for AOSB might be difficult but I know of at least one guy who managed it. Like any other regiment most of the selection process will hinge on performance at RMAS and an assessment from a battalion visit should you manage to get one.
Bear in mind the RGR are currently one of the most oversubscribed infantry regiments, along with the Paras and the Rifles. A considerable interest in Nepal along with language aptitude would definitely be looked upon favourably. Your friend might also like to think about the Royal Engineers as they have a Gurkha squadron which is an option for officers, along with doing either the commando course or P Coy.
Encourage him to have a look at some other infantry regiments as well - it's not just about the green, maroon and kukri these days!
