If you want hard graft general labour, get on with a gang that replaces the water mains, digging all day, and everything they use weighs alot.

Job centre is your best bet. Or look in your local paper.

You don't really need to bother with CVs and interview for this sort of work, unless of course you are qualified in certain areas or something specific.

Some of my mates said they've turned up at sites with work boots and a hi vis vest and gotten jobs on the spot. Another worked repairing the roads for a while, and apparently if you managed to get onto that work and work the nights, there's a fair bit of money in it.

Labourers require a CSCS card, you will need one before anyone can take you on.

Well, it sounds like a nice idea, but I'd think twice personally. If you are already at a level of fitness to pass PRMC / start RT, then fair enough. However, if you need to train to get up to that level, it's probably not smart to be doing a physically exhausting 9-5.

I took up a similar job (bike messenging) for the same reason as you, but found that it actually stopped me developing the kind of fitness I needed, as I was f@#k exhausted all the time, and so couldn't train effectively. Got very good at cycling, not so much at running and military style fitness. In the end I had to pare it back to part time work so I could train properly.

Another example of the same thing, a lot of guys who have dropped of our 4 PARA cadre seemed to have manual labour jobs too, and they were certainly finding it tough to do the job by day and train by night.
