traing to improve pullups

ok dose any one out there have any ideas about how i can improve my pullups at the moment darren has got me doing various things 3/4 pullups jumping sideways pullups and have managed to get my self to one pullup if any one has a solution for this problem i would love to hear it thanks a mil from chris

Practice,practice,practice. :o

Nearly everyone is the same when it comes to starting pull ups, get yourself in the posistion so your chin is above the bar by jumping up in stead of pulling up, and just let your muscle feel the strain of your weight as your coming down from the pull up. Do that a fair few times, then try 1 pull up.

I was the same as you and so are most people, just keep at it,I can do a fair few of them still and havn't been practicing for months, so i think once you got it, you got it, like riding a bike. I vary them a bit aswell, I know PRMC they have to be over hand, but I do overhand, underhand, and put my head in front of the bar,then behind,in front,behind, and so on.

As FairyDust said, first start with negative pullups, whereby you start with your chin already above the bar then you lower yourself down slowly. Keep doing that to build the muscle until strong enough to do more pullups

Also half pull ups helped me alot. Get a broom or pole or something put it across to chairs then sit down in between the chairs with your arse slightly forward of the bar and haul yourself up(legs slightly bent stretched out in front so when you rise up only your feet touch the ground). Do sets of these combined with the negative pull ups and hopefully you should improve. I found pull ups take the longest to show improvement so just hang in there and keep doing them.

i think i might have to give the mixed grip and moving head in fron t and behind.


I'm currently doing about 10-12 underhand grip. what kind of number is a good standard to be happy at? Or should that just be as many as you'll ever be able to do??

Well for PRMC you have to do a minimum of 3 overgrasp, so you need to be doing at least this, if not more as you'll be tired when you do them at PRMC. But obviously you should aim to do as many as you can possibly do.
Try doing assisted ones with a mate, where they support you slightly round you waist so you have a little bit less weight on your arms.

I posted a smilar question at www.prmc.co.uk on Thursday, could hardly do one, but I can do 3/4 now.

The one that worked for me was starting with your chin above the bar, coming 2/3 of the way down and back up, so not quite full ones but it works your muscles, and after a few days you can do them fully :)

Underhand Pull ups do not exist, they are called chin ups. Many people find chin ups alot easier due to the different muscle groups involved. Light incline close grip benching, aswell as lat pulldowns can dramatically improve your pulls. Just don't expect miracles.

you lot really make things hard for yourself , just slap a pull up bar inmyour house everytime you walk by it , do as many as you can . It will start to improve. :D

Thats what i did, i brought a crapy one from argos, put in my stair way and every now and then i just crack as many as i can out. Even though the bar isnt the same as PRMC it still works the same muscle groups.

The work out plan above has been helping me alot. At the begining I could only do 1 pullup but now I can do 12 in a few months of keeping at it and going up the steps. I do it five days a week, first thing in the morning. Go up the steps every 2 weeks and you will see improvments I hope :D Good luck with training all!

lads some of these pull up programs are rediculous , just do as many pull ups even if its just half a pull up whenever you get the chance . Down at ctc you dont do as many pull ups as you think . id worry more about front support place(press ups) as i was in that the majority of the time haha .

Yeh true, and cos their done on a beam at CTC their much harder than a bar. I could do about 9 full ones in a civvy gym at CTC I was strugglinG at 5. Pressups I was hoofin at though, think it because I used to do a lot weights.
