well chaps, seems its end of for me, had my 3rd PJFT yesterday and failed it by seconds, im not saying this because i failed it iv said it all along, but how can you judge ones fitness levels on a treadmill, i train like an athlete seeing as im un-employed, so im not unfit by no mans standards,

is it worth going in afco for a chat to see if theyl let me proove my self on next weeks RMAD or is that it for ever??

im going to speak to them now and if it is Game Over il be applying for the paras!

Dont worry mate, there are plenty of other things out there to be getting on with. Like your paras mate.


If i were to fail god for bid, id end up joining the paras, or RGJ or RAF Regiment or even the guards division. There is always an alternative. Look at it like this, at least you dont have an injury that could stop you altogther :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:


I should be fine though.

Bad news mate, I guess you just have a problem running on a treadmill.

I think I'd better get down the gym and practice as all my training so far has been done on the roads, fields and the beach.

Every cloud as the say, maybe you are better suited for the Para's, fingers crossed it works out for you.

what was your problem on the treadmil? can you just not run on them or was it your stamina?

If nothing comes of it though mate, i'm a big believer of fate and whatever happens with yourself it will be for the right reasons, so keep your head up and don't give in!

Harsh mate, Harsh.

Yeh have a chat with your AFCO, you never know eh?!

Failing that my next choice would to be going for the PARAs as well, they are both similar soldiers, highly respected and both must earn the right to wear their beret.

If you do complete P Coy (i think thats what its called) you may be able to apply for the all arms commando course later down the line (im not sure how this works though - somebody with a better understanding may be able to help you out)

Either way, Never say die!

How fast can you run 1.5 miles on the roads ?

If you really do have a problem with running on treadmills, then explain this to the AFCO.

Where is this RMAD going to be held ?

Smudger - You clearly can run on a treadmill if you completed the run. If you only failed it by a few seconds then you just got the speed wrong!

I've never understood why the Marines bother with the PJFT as Treadmills aren't a good indicator of anything really.

I can run a BFT in about 8:40 but I find it difficult to run at speed on a treadmill, however, I know people who are great on a treadmill but can't run down the road without getting sore legs!!

Surely it'd be better and cheeper if the AFCO just organised a run for potential recruits.

I know a lot of people have said there is a big difference between treadmills and road, can't really comment as I haven't been on a treadmill for ages. I hear what you say about them not being relevant because you aren't going to be going to war on a treadmill but it all comes down to cost at the end of the day.
With the current PJFT you can just book it at the local gym at your convenience and the MOD just cover the cost of the gyms' time or whatever. If they were to start organising their own outdoor runs you have to start considering, locations, staff, admin, etc. Not to mention making it fair for everyone.
I'm not saying it couldn't be done but they will always look for the most cost-effective solution.

unlucky mate

did you practice much on a treadmill before you had the PJFT?

what speed did you have it set at?

I think the treadmill is a fair way of doing it, it's free of outside factors that could hinder performance and makes it fair across the board.

Well considering it probably costs at least a tenner for every one who does it at a gym I can't see how it'd cost much more.

All you'd have to do is measure out 1 1/2 miles and then have someone from the AFCO stand there and time them, then right it down. Maybe that is simplifying it a bit but lets face it it's not an indepth assessment is it.

They could block book it to make it even easier for themselves.

I think the moral of this story though is if your applying for the Marines you best get yourself on a treadmill and make sure you know what level you need to run at to make the time, cause if you don't get that rght you've got no chance of doing it quick enough no matter who you are. :lol:

I think the PJFT is designed as a very early indicator of levels of fitness and come on if you cannot do 10.45 or whatever it is on a treadmill then you have to really think about joining the Royal Navy/Marines.

I think the PJFT is a Royal Navy thing more than anything but obviously all potential Royal Marines have to do it as they are also part of the Navy.

I understand that running on a treadmill is harder for some (including me) due to indoor heat, lack of confidence etc but its not really that hard to get inside the required time, and if you cannot do that then really you don't stand a chance at the PRMC from what I hear!

Plus you get 3 attempts, how much more help do you need?

I can't say I've ever been to a gym in Liverpool but if you can charge £10 for a 10 minute run on a treadmill then I'm definately going to open one up there!
