Sat and read this on the train last night. Awesome stuff. It's interesting to get a 'scientific' breakdown on the Royal Marine ethos, and how it's created. Also has some interesting historical titbits.

No offence intended Deadhead but I wouldn't call sociology 'scientific'!

Nonetheless, worth a read.

'No offence mate' but inverted commas are used to indicate that the word written does not actually imply what that word normally implies.

For example by putting inverted commas around 'no offence mate' I'm actually implying that I couldn't care less if you're offended, but this is just an example...

Sorry Fubar, there was me thinking Deadhead was old enough and ugly enough to look after himself...

'Thanks' for the grammar lesson- if you have any more grammar related posts I suggest you put them on- www.learn-english-grammar.com

'Cheers'

You're reply to my post just reinforces my initial point - No one likes a smart arse, not even you it would seem.

Although I can't say I know Deadhead well, we've exchanged pm's and I got the impression that he wouldn't jump on a remark such as the one I made- I wasn't making the point to get one over on Deadhead, I was making it so people on this forum who may not know about sociology realise that it is only one sociology Professor's opinion based on some chats with Marines and books he has read. Therefore like all things on this forum, it should be taken with a pinch of salt. It was a light-hearted comment that I posted as I have had some experience with sociology.

In future I would advise you to apply your standards to yourself- although my comment to deadhead may be perceived to be 'smart-arsed', your response certainly was. These forums should be a place for a bit of banter, that is what you'll get in military life and it's a good thing. I shouldn't have to worry that an off-the-cuff post will be shoved back down my throat.

Looking through some of your previous posts, you seem to have adopted the position of 'forum policeman'. The moderators are here for that, not you.

I'd like to apologise to Deadhead if my post unintentionally caused any offence

Now, all I suggest is that you and I let it go and that people on these forums are free to voice their opinions without having to worry about defending them when people over-react because they are a little bit too sensitive

Could I just go on the record here and say I wasn't offended? Cheers.

OK, so I view sociology as a science, albeit one slightly more open to interpretation than say, chemistry. And the report in question is a far more logic driven examination of the ethos of the marines, as opposed to the more emotional/personal view that a lot of the literature has. I don't think I've ever seen that much written solely about the ethos of RM before. So in that sense, douguk, I happen to disagree. It is scientific. But I'm not annoyed that you disagree. Nor am I 'annoyed', "annoyed" or *annoyed*.

Fubar, don't take this the wrong way, but if I have a problem with someone on here, or something they've said, I'll say so. Please don't start battles for me that I have no wish to have.

Now play nicely children, or daddy will spank. :o
