I have not done any swimming for a long time untill last week. I'm a pretty handy runner and feel im very fit. Basically I got in the pool last week, and started swimming and after 1 length, bang both my legs had extreme cramp. any idea whats wrong ?

i used to have the same prob, get your technique looked at by a pro, it could just be the way you are kicking your legs.

have a good warm up before swimming just like you would do on a normal exercise programme and see how you get on.

Yeh basically that, just do a good warm up, also, I know this'll sound like I'm patronising(but I'm not) if you haven't swam for a long time take it steady to begin with, a lot of guys who swim at the pool I work at come in and go for it straigh away - had to save one of them who had cramp, wasn't pretty!
Btw - start with freestyle as it's the best for loosening up, NEVER warm up on breaststroke...
