Hi People,

Do young officers get the chance to win the commando medal and kings badge? If a normal recruit wins the kings badge or commando medal, will they have an increased chance of success for getting a chance for quicker promotion, or maybe even a commission from the ranks.

Jes Mitch, lots of lots of questions about going forward in the ranks and you haven't even passed basic training yet...get your priorities right

MB I hope you are as good as you think think you are LOL! I had done some weekends away before I did my basic training at Lichfield I know yours is differenent but the staff will put you through the mill.. if you are good let them spot you

Come on lads, he asked a sensible question, so give him a sensible answer. And if you don't know what your talking about shut up. If you don't learn that one none of you will pass out of training.

Until recently, a recruit straight out of training had to wait 12 months before becoming a candidate for promotion. However, if you had a Kings Badge you went straight on the list and there for beat you troop mates by a year. Commando medal holders got six months advancement.

However, with the new system of merit based promotion, no one waits and in theory, if you walk on water and are the bees knees you should get on a JCC very quickly anyway. A Kings badgeman certainly gets more respect after he passes out of training and should in theory get very good reports.

Officers compete for the sword of honor. Given to the best officer in the batch. The only officers you will ever see with a Kings badge are ones that have won it as a recruit and then gone on to get a Corps Commision. Quite rare.

Don't forget a Kings badge is not awarded at every pass out. Only if the best recruit is up to the minimum standard required to win it. This is not uncommon.

Yes it has been known. Again rare.

I personaly don't rate this system, i know some blokes who got KB that should never have been awarded it. (If your face fits)

Just a few points.

Not every squad has a Kings Badgeman. To have a Kings Badge, you have to be outstanding in your squad. My squad did not have one!!

Any squad that does have a Kings Badgeman, then that person has a very good chance of being offered a Corps Commission.

That is why you see so many officers wearing the Kings Badge on thier shoulders.

When I was in training there was this Jock bloke who had Candled in at Dunkerswell whilst Sport Parachuting.

So many blokes in his Troop were either binned or biffed that the blokes left in the Troop had to wait for guys to come out of Chosin Troop (now Hunter Troop) to make the numbers up so they could resume training. During this wait for more recruits the remainder of the Troop undertook Adventure Training. Jock opted for Parachuting.

He was at CTC for over three years. From 1971 to 1974. In the end the Docs realised that he was never going to be fully fit again so he opted to become a Special Entry Clerk as this meant he could get his Flashes and join a unit. Back then some blokes joined as Special Entry recruits. After 14 weeks training all recruits were awarded there Green Lid but not there flashes if they passed the required tests. At this stage the Special entry blokes would leave training and go onto either a Chefs Course or a Clerks course.

Anyway Jock was a Diamond in his troop and retained his Diamond whilst the Docs sorted him out. The poor sod was 12 months in Hospital getting put back together again. Come the completion of his Clerks course he was awarded the Kings Badge, the Commando medal and his flashes as it was felt that he had shown true Commando Spirit thoughout his ordeal.

I think he was the only bloke to have been given this unique honour in all the years since the instigation of the Kings Badge.

If a bloke is unlucky enough to get injured and go into Hunter, does it look bad on his record, mark against him for promotion/selection for specialisations, or winning king's badge etc. ?

I am not 100% sure on this but I can't see why it would put a black mark against your name. I mean it isn't your fault you tripped and broke your leg or something like that. If anything if you do eventually get your green lid it shows you have stuck with it despite having set backs and you achieved your goal, perhaps demonstrating the commando spirit in its entirety.
