Hi all.
God damn speed march!
I passed every other test (fieldcraft and physical) with no trouble, but once again my lack of aerobic fitness let me down. I know it was only a 4 miler and the course was pretty flat, but the 32lbs took there toll and my legs refused to carry me at the same speed as the rest of the troop.
7 other recruits failed the speed march and as a result we've all been back trooped, ready to start it all over again (doh!) in June.
As far as i'm aware, there will be a new holding troop for Birmingham Det. RMR Merseyside (and i assume the same for Manchester and Liverpool) starting in April, in preparation for a selection date in June. So, any budding reservists, get in contact with your local detachments and see what the score is.
I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Failed Phase 1 Confirmation...Bugger
Sorry to hear that, im sure you gave it your all though and you cant ask for much more than that.
So if you fail any of the tests you have to go back into holding troop? do you have to do the assessment/selection weekend again?
what other tests did you do apart from the speed march, was it all in the same week and what time did you have to do the speed march in?
im back in holding troop now.....next selection is in 6 months or so, feels like such a long time! on the plus side i know what to expect now.
cheers!

Hi everyone.
It was just the 'phase 1' course as they call it now, it's basically the phase 1 Alpha course, but they re-badged it. They did this as they were finding recruits that had gotten their green lid, weren't necessarily qualified to be deployed straight away. The course is now shorter but even more compact.
The tests were as follows over the weekend:
Friday night - 8 mile load carry carrying whatever you had in you bergan, webbing and a rifle. I'd guess at around 70lbs. The first 4 miles were completed in just under an hour, with the tall guys (including myself) at the back having to practically run to keep up.
Saturday Morning - Field kit inspection (marked out of 10), map reading test (back bearings, etc), military knowledge test.
Saturday Afternoon - Cam and concealment test, including a stalk and an observation stance. Fire control orders test. Judging distance test.
Saturday Evening - Night Nav-Ex individual effort
Sunday Morning - 4 mile speed march in 40mins with 21lbs of kit and a rifle.
Thats it. Rope climbs were done at the detchment the week before to check you weren't a complete spanner, but they were not a pass/fail test.

About two years ago when I tried it was phase 1A: 7 weekends (including induction) followed by a 2 week 1A course at CTC. If you pass this stage then its a further 8 weekends at least, followed by 2 week RFCC at CTC. then onto phase 2 "commando company" where you attain the rest of the commando skills i.e. cliffs, heles, boats, live field firing, etc. used to take at least a year to get to phase 2 if I remember correctly. Phase 2 can take any amount of time depending on how you do it and how much time you have. I got to the 2 week 1A course and failed, got back-trooped after I couldn't make it on to the retake (which if I had passed I would have been allowed to carry on).
If this has changed I’d be interested to know how as I intend having another go at some point.
JZ.

The 2 week phase 1 course still exists, I failed the confimation weekend which you have to pass in order to go down to lympstone for the fortnight.
Statistic, as far as i know (don't quote me on it) the commando skills that were incorporated into phase 2 (when it was 1A and 1B) are now packed into the new phase 2 as well.
We started in September, with the aim of doing our commando course in June/July, taking roughly 10 months. This is a quicker turn-around time than it used to be with the 1A, 1B and 2 set up.

Here is the way it is working out for us anyway (RMR Scotland),
Started Phase 1A in september
Went down on the 1A course, which has since been renamed Phase 1 Course but is exactly the same as before, at the end of January.
We are now into Phase 2 training with an RFCC date set for the end of July.
Hope this is of some assistance
