Hi, I'm from the Irish Republic and have been looking into joining up. Naturally I am more inclined to look at the Irish regiments first, so are there any Irish Guardsmen or 1 Royal Irish lads who can advise me of the pros and cons of joining either of these regiments. I just read Tim Collins' book and was quite impressed with the Royal Irish Regiment, but have heard great stuff about the Irish Guards too. So can anyone advise me further. Thanks Lads. oh and where are the Irish Guards posted these days I heard something about them going to Cyprus for 2 years??

More Scousers and Brummies in the Irish Guards than the Irish. Well it seems that way. The Irish Guards played Civvi Rioters against 3 Para just recently and lets just say the Irish Guards were well up for it.

I think but only think the Irish Guards are at Wellington Barracks in London at the moment. But Im not sure. Anyway not much help I know but good luck anyway

Have worked alongside with both regiments, As was said the Irish Guards or the “micks” as we called them have a lot of English lads in them, English lads who joined the Irish guards during the height of the NI troubles where dubbed “war dodgers” for the reason that the guards did not serve in NI until the early 90’s, please correct me if im wrong which I would not be surprised if I am.
The Royal Irish always seem to have a reputation at home as a very mischievous lot.
Sorry this was not very relevant

My dad was in the welsh guards and served in NI from 85-86. I'm in the grenadiers (nijmegan company) based in london. Micks are shit at ceremonial and full of scousers. Ur from the irish republic anyway, irish and joining the british army? No offence mate but join the royal irish

Don't forget you can still join the Queen's Royal Hussars (Queen's Own & Royal Irish) and the Royal Dragoon Guards (including 5th Inniskilling DG). These have high numbers of Irish guys and welcome recruits from south of the border.
