I dont want to sound like a wannabe but I was wondering whether there is a specialisations in the Army that focuses on Mountain Warfare. I know in the Marines there are Mountain Leaders but does the army have the same sort of thing. Is there a complete specialised regiment or is it just a specialisation and then they are attached to different regiments.

At one time Mountain Warefair was for the Army but now it is just the Royal Marines.

There is a whole world of difference between someone with an ML (Summer) and a Royal Marine Mountain Leader!!!!

While we're on the subject, am I the only person who finds it odd that mountain warfare is part of the Royal Marines but is also the responsibility of the SAS (which until recently was an Army regiment). Why weren't the SBS given any responsibility?

Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question, I know mountains aren't exactly maritime, but I'm just curious.

I remember reading a while back that certain Infantry Battalions in the Light Role were being given extra training to specialise. I think the RHF went on some sort of mountain climbing/warfare course. Nowhere near to the standard of the RM MLs. There was something about it in Soldier magazine, saying that other battalions would get the chance to do jungle or urban warfare.

I don't know if this experiment died a death? Maybe somone who knows more than me can help?

At one time the Battalion who were designated ACE mobile force Batt would have 3 months in Norway where they were Taught the joys of M & AW training by the RM ML's

Units that did this were the POW's, 1 Para, Derrs to name but three. As to what happens now. Pass.

I maybe wrong but my understanding is that no unit has Mountain Warfare "responsibilty"
In Hereford the mountain element is an insertion skill, alongside air. mobility and boat troops.
RM has artic warfare responsibilty (3 Cdo alongside the cloggies were designated to NATOs northern flank)
RM ML's not only serve in the BPT but also in units as is the corps way to expand and share knowledge. I would therefore suggest that the SB are fully trained up and equipped to tackle a mountain.
