You can have 2 attempts at selection for 22, and 3 attempts at selection for 21.
Does that answer your question?

Maybe your friend was an exception, but from a reliable source, i hear its only 2.

It's discretionary.
If you are a complete cock or withdraw yourself from the course you generally don't get another try.
If you get binned for not making the times then you normally get another go.
I would hazard a guess that the '3 attempts' rule is applicable if/when they are down on numbers and/or if you are a decent bod.
