Hi Brian.
I am unsure of this I have never served in the armed forces, but I assume that this site could be of use?

if you have any medals the soldiers regiment/unit is sometimes printed on the side (where the latin is on a normal coin)
Regiment?

Hi Brian
If your relative served during WW2 that number is part of a block that was issued to the RASC.
Hope that gives you a starting place.
Take care mate.
