Could be worse Pasha...............on second thoughts.
I spent 4 hours yesterday trying to get my scanner to speaka da English instead of Spanish.
Thankfully ebuyer came to the rescue.

My Hewlett Packard copier-faxer-scanner-printer recently decided that scanning was beneath its dignity and that the receipt of faxes is out of the question. Changing the drivers, changing the software, even uninstalling the latest "SP2" upgrade to Windows XP -- none of it has worked. HP's customer support has been totally clueless. Let's face it, kids, this stuff is designed not to work half the time. They suck you in far enough to make you depend on it, then they lower the hammer.

There's your problem, that SP2 download.

Model 1350 (I don't know ifs it any different to UK model) is much better and pretty straightforward, unless you're dependent on the faxing facility.

Riddle me this, Batman: If SP2 did it, why won't it work after I've uninstalled SP2, uninstalled the machine, re-loaded the software that originally came with the machine and re-installed the machine? Why can't I get back to
status quo ante? I'm telling you, it's a conspiracy. Axis of evil? Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard if you ask me.

Not no expert Robin
but some might say the 'damage' has been done already. Some people have had to uninstall and reinstall their operating system (is that what you ment by the software?) to make sure the error is not undetected. As far as I know, HP are the pretty much the best when it comes to the multifunction machines, it could be a case that your HP does not like the make-up of the SP2 (or vice versa):

IF it is to do with SP2, there are also repair packs and security packs to - well - to sort out the f#ck-ups.

Pasha there are a few things you can try before writing off the hard drive entirely. Theres an article here :

At the last resort you can get a hardware recovery guru to retrieve the data. Will set you back a few bob, up to four times the cost of the hard drive according to the aticle but thats not bad for saving four years of work!

Greetings Pasha,
I knew a former matelot chief petty officer in the IT dept where I used to work. It used to be great, I'd phone him up as say "Oi Jack, can you have a look at this for me". Anyway, we got on pretty well and a colleague had the same kind of problem. Said Jack said that he'd spent hours copying MS DOS files across and managed to recover all of the data. I don't know if he could help but I'll try and get in touch with him if you like.

You said your 2nd drive is dead as well. You should have some sort of warenty with it, so it would be worth getting on the phone and speaking to the company you bought it of and getting them to replace it.
