Martial Arts

I've been a follower of martial arts for about 7 years now (I'm 18) and have a 2nd Dan black belt in Taekwondo and currently train in Kickboxing and Chi Yau Saek (Freestyle Kung fu). I can hit pretty hard and have reasonable flexibility, I also have an alright understanding of how to hurt people with the least amount of effort on my behalf. I do a bit of weapons training at Kung fu and tonnes of sparring at Taekwondo. I understand that in a war situation it is very different to training and pretty much all that I've learnt would go out the window, but I was wondering if it would stand me in good stead for SF training (ie. mentality, conditioning, physical awareness). See, I aspire to join the SBS (I know it's a long shot as I haven't even done basic training for the Marines yet but...) and would love to carry on martial arts. There are teams for different martial arts in the forces, but are SF banned from that at all?

I had a good question in my mind but ended up waffeling when I typed it up. Sorry, if you don't understand what I'm trying to get across, just complain and I'll try to rectify it. :-?

My eczema is going down at the moment, it's the most random thing ever. It mostly flares up when I get stressed (ie. exams, but I've finished school for good now) and then goes down when I relax (like now, I have my own house for 2 weeks while my old man's on his honeymoon).

Good luck with your plan. I just hope I either don't get eczema during basic or don't get pinged. I managed to hide it from my best mates who I've known for years
I doubt you will pass the medical for SF selection

A 2nd Dan in Taekwondo will enable you to skip most of SF training, particularly Section Well-Hard of the unarmed combat phase. Read more at www.areyoufcukingjoking.mod.uk

A second Dan in whatever it is, will not allow you to skip any SF training
Where do you get these ideas?
Martial Arts have NO use whatsoever in SF training.
In fact they are a waste of time.

Rubbish SB, of course it's useful....................writing those reams of fiction for random house etc needs elbow room. What better way to achieve it than covertly hurling your next door neighbour over the seat in front. Children, don't try this on the long drive back to Islington next week.

Just threaten to break the instructors arms. It can go two ways, he backs down and lets you skip it or he breaks your face....body....legs...and head.

Fully agree with you El Prez.

As I understand it a Pink Belt in Origami is now a basic requisite for anyone looking to join Special Forces.

Just a quiet wind up. been a long day.
Seriously your martial arts are all well and good, but I think SB would agree that if you've got that close then you must be out of ammo and options. Put it this way, it won't do you or your reflexes any harm, but won't make the ride easier through the system.

I'm no expert by a long shot, but I would have thought that the only way that martial arts would help in the forces is with the self discipline bit. Even then, it's a different kind of discipline. You could do martial arts as a sport, but I can't see it helping on the battlefield, special forces or not.

First of all you need to join either the Marines or the Army, once you got into one of those and you have a few years in as a soldier, you could then apply for a branch of the SF. Now you will have to pass the course before you are accepted, now martial arts may get you very fit but it won't be a ticket into the SF.
