Passing Out as a Gunner in 8 days...

Well, I've managed to pass the TG course as an original...

week 17 now and we're doing 'key skills' (GNVQ) . Ive thouroughly enjoyed the course and I've made some great mates. At the mo I'm a little dissapointed as we just recieved our postings. I'm going to 34 Squadron in Leeming. I put my first 3 choices down as Rapier - 37, 26, 16 but no one on our course got Rapier... =[

I pass out on July 8th and going to Belize for Jungle training in October then relieving 51 sqdn in Iraq in January. I was under the impression that Rapier was crying out for people so not getting Rapier shocked me a little. My best mates also put down Rapier and they're going on the same Sqdn as me so thats a bonus =]

Im now excited and nervous...
Anyone on this forum served with 34 sqdn? Whats the base like, facilities etc?

I banked on getting Rapier no probs but didnt. Im worried on whats gonna happen with me and my girlfriend (I've been with her for 4 yrs). War is now a reality for me, Im not scared, its what we've been trained to do, its just gonna be hard missing my girl (or will she want to finish with me?) =[

Anyways! Back to the training,
Ive done so much since starting the course and you cant really describe what its like until youre actually here. Bayonet training was probably my favourite part... getting beasted then just going mental =] Ive represented the RAF Reg in a shooting competition against other RAF recruits (coming 4th out of 31 other recruits).

Ive been trained on how to fight in built up areas, throw grenades, the list is endless. I have so many memories allready and look forward to doing many other great things in the future.

My advice to new recruits is to keep your head down, do what you're told and make sure you have a sense of humour  . At highest we've had 49 people on course and now we're left with 16 originals and 5 re-coursees. I am one of those originals and I feel extremely proud with myself. I think the passing out parade will be one of the best days of my life.

We got the course piss up :drinking: this friday so should be fun. Speak to ya'll soon

Well done mate! hopefully ill be joining you soon! (pgac in august)

Leeming should be alright mate.

And, if you and your girl have been together for 4 years, a few months in Bellize wont be a problem.

oh, seen the pictures you posted, quality!

David, a few questions for you, did you get to do helo drills during you're training, how hard physically is it, is PGAC an accurate representation of the firtness you'll need to nail training? That Minimi looks like loadsa fun!

Lo lads, thanks =]

bootneck, to be honest the PGAC can never represent what its like in training. The fieldcrafts are hard (sleep deprivation sucks). You will get beasted obviously but its all part of the training. You'l get shouted at, personally insulted and kit thrown left right and centre. This broke a lot of people but if you can get through the first 8-10 weeks then you should be ok. Things are so different now from when we 1st started. I had lots of low points where I nearly left cos of missing my girl but im really glad I didnt.

The PTI's build you up to carrying weight so I shoudlnt worry to much if you can do the 3 miler no probs. I'd advise to get upper body strength sorted (plenty of pressups!) You will feel like #### at some points in the course but if you can get past it then thats half the course sorted..

Bayonet training was by far the biggest beasting we got but at the same time was ace letting out all the aggression. Other than that mate, good luck and as a CPL on the PGAC once said to me, 'I hope to see you on the passing out parade in July'... and I am :P

GOOD LUCK

Going to 34 sqn are you.
Well it's ok. Full of sprogs now though. All the senior lads are being
Ppromoted or posted so it's a very inexperienced sqn now.
I've enjoyed my time there but am moving on now. Have done 3 tours since joining the sqn. Oman, Kenya and Iraq. Been to loads of countries and took part in the last Gulf war so it can't be bad.
Get your self on mortars and have some real fun!!

Is it all hush-hush or can you divulge a little more info?
