ON THIS DAY
Been meaning to introduce this topic for a while now, but here goes.
On this day.....
in 1815, Napoleon escaped from Elba to begin round two, "This time it`s personal"
in 1915, flame throwers used for the first time when Herman`s 3 guard pioneers, toasted a few Kermits at Malancourt
in 1993 a bomb in the World Trade Center killed six and injured one thousand
of more interest to those who can" stand, and be still"...
in 1852, the troopship Birkenhead sank off Simon`s Bay South Africa,with the loss of 485 souls.
Over to you, "genuine" posts please. Tossers will be binned.

Actually I think that this one is my favourite.
Explains military life to a T.
I would have liked to have the same meteoric rise in rank.

www.historychannelbollocks.com I can see a theme behind your posts Noz
I`m a couple of days out on this one,but it`s the anniversary of the Godfather of Soul, Mr James Brown getting released early from nick. One of the things he was sentanced for, was evading the police during a car chase which went through two states.
Like to see the old bastard try that down here, it`s two day`s drive to the nearest state border
OWWWWWWWWah, mercy
For those of you who don`t know, the Birkenhead was the first occasion that the cry "Women and Children first" was used. Royal Marines stood to attention as she went under, and this became known as the "Birkenhead Drill" Kipling had this to say....
To take your chance in the thick of a rush, with firing all about,
Is nothing so bad when you've cover to 'and, an' leave an' likin' to shout;
But to stand an' be still to the Birken'ead drill
is a damn tough bullet to chew,
An' they done it, the Jollies 'Er Majesty's Jollies
soldier an' sailor too!
Their work was done when it 'adn't begun; they was younger nor me an' you;
Their choice it was plain between drownin' in 'eaps
an' bein' mopped by the screw,
So they stood an' was still to the Birken'ead drill, soldier an' sailor too!
We're most of us liars, we're 'arf of us thieves,
an' the rest are as rank as can be,
But once in a while we can finish in style
(which I 'ope it won't 'appen to me).
But it makes you think better o' you an' your friends,
an' the work you may 'ave to do,
When you think o' the sinkin' Victorier's Jollies soldier an' sailor too!
Here`s to `em
