You wear craphats until the sixth week if I remember rightly, when you pass off the square. You then wear the beret but with the green backing behind the cap badge to show that you are still a crow and haven't done P-Company. Only when you pass P-Company can you take the green backing off and wear the beret for real.

"you wear craphats till the 6th week"

How can you wear a craphat? I thought a crap hat was what Paras refer to other soldiers as..because they dont have the maroon berets.

Charlie, they are the soft peak caps that are worn in depot and also in the field. More often referred to as "c@#t caps". Hope that clears your confusion.

Do you get special hat box after you have joined and got your beret, and also do you get to give your rifle a name........

Sorry sarcasm is the lowest form of wit... Para helmets are known to need treatmants after a weeks leave in Rotterdam - so I have been told, good weekend to all.

If the question is aimed at 4Para you have to wear them, stupid, ill fitting 'crap hats' till passing P-coy and being 'officially' presented with your maroon lid on the parade ground.... that is after the night before when you have 'un-officially' pranced around the billet blocks soaking them and moulded em to your heads so they look the business.

If join the Para's from a Line Regiment then you get your Beret once you have completed the full course. If you sign on just for the Para's then they used to wear the Beret from day one. Back in the 50's there used to be a white patch behind the badge to indicate that they were still penguins.
The patch behind the badge really stood out so that every one knew just who was who. As far the helmets go all I cann talk abot is when I used to wear them. On the airborne helmets of my day there used to be a shaped chip socket which was attached by straps to the front and back of the helmet to stop it being torn of in the slip stream, at this time the standard helmet was the same as it had been in WW1 and two.

a para helmet is lighter and more aero-dynamic than a regular helmet. it also looks a lot cooler, and usually has a net rather than straps over the top. If you want a picture, just go to http://www.parachute-regiment.com- i'm sure there's a pic of a few paras wearing helmets there.

Also, during training with the paras, you wear the beret with a green patch behind the capbadge (I'm not sure if it's after a certain length of time, or right from the start) - you can't take the patch off until you've passed p-coy.

I have got to admit that I thought the cap that you wore until you qualified was called a c**t cap. Mainly because you looked like one wearing it.
