RMR as a gap-filler

Can any of the old and bold or more knowledgable members enlighten me as to whether joining an RMR unit whilst prep'ing for another crack for POC next year is a wise move? I have emailed my ACLO but thought i'd pick some brain cells on here as well.

Your nearest detachment would be Birmingham, so aside from the traveling (quite a fair bit from Loughborough) your best bet is to contact RMR Mersey's Phase 1alpha PSI or the recruiting senior/ officer.
They would be best placed to advise if they can help.

Realistically in order to gain anything from it you'd need to put a lot of time in - not easy when you live 40 miles away.
Alternatively there a number of TA units local to you which clearly are not of the same standard as RMR you'll learn something about infantry soldiering.

Just be careful that that there isn't a lot of red tape to unwind when you come to the stage of retrying POC. By joing the TA you are signing onto the Army and I wonder if the records offices would see it as a transfer and want you to complete a thousand forms with approval from all sorts of people.
Just a thought....

The distances you guys mention make me chuckle. Now I'm living in Canada, if you aren't willing to travel long distances, you won'g get anywhere. I drive 350 Kms to staff college every weekend (leave at 15:00 on a Friday, get home 21:00 on Sunday night).

I dont know what the Infantry Units down there are like. It says theres a 4 para recce platoon in Nottingham. It doesn't explain the other infantry Units and if they are rifles, mortars, SF etc.
You should maybe ring them and find out what they do first cos some of those infantry units may have shite jobs

4 para will be equal in standard to the RMR. Especially a recce platoon. In my recruit cadre, we started with around 40 and ended up with just 5 at the end of phase 1. But the rewards are definately worth it.

1: How old are you?
2: Remember evey one that joins starts off the same, wether you have military experance or not.
3: You would be better off getting fit rather than gaining military exp. yes it would be nice but not essesential, it's no good having all the know how if you can't run etc. plus by the time that they do allthe checks on you to join medicals etc its going to be about the summer time also if you tell them yhat you are only doing until you join the regs they propberley won't let you. look at it from there point of veiw spending all that time & money on you and then you go and join up.
Good luck with what you do I had the best 25 years of my life in the corps

Thanks for all the advice, from the info i've leamed from yourselves and the reserve forces forum it will probably be best to give it a miss. Plus it would be a very selfish reason to take up a place if others were intending to stay the duration. As good an experience as it would be i'm devoting my time to travelling and training - combining the two where possible. I'm looking for some of the toughest activities/ sports to broaden my training. If anyone's got any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. So far i'm including some triathlon-type training and possibly some cross-country/fell running, taking in some sights wherever poss. Money permitting the world is my oyster for a year!

I don't know how long you got off but you could try working for Camp America. Looking after teenage yanks at summer school . The money,s not good but there are laods of perks. The weathers a lot better over there anyway.
