Right, I wanna join the RM.

Currently im in the ATC (have a good laugh ), our Sqn is nuffin like its supposed to be though, more "army" that RAF. Basiclly we wear blues one a year, and spend 24/7 doing MFT. (Lots of time spent at SENTA too). I lvoe it, when i joined i wanted to join the RAF, 3yrs later......Royals

Anyways, I got decent GCSEs and ALevels, and im gunna goto uni in september (lots of reasons for this).....plan to join the TA's Officer Training Corps while im there.

Ive been speaking with my mae who joined the OTC last sept, and he loves it, hes an officer cadet like, but says its fantastic...get paid for it too

He's done loads of courses, just completed his Army PTI course (mainly Paras on the course apparently, an one 23SAS bloke)...says he got a bit of stick for being an officer cadet, to be expect really tho.....but he's loving it. He's trying to get his name down to be para trained (get his wings) ASAP also.

I am wodnering, if I am an officer cadet for 3yrs, get PTI trained, my wings, and possibly even do the All Arms Commando Course, how would this affect me joining the Royals?

I *think* at the moment, i wanna just join as a nod, be part of the team, actually on the frontline, doing operations etc, as opposed to an officer (who I wouldent have thaught is as involved in the actual combat).


Whats peoples thaughts on this, im not sure if i'd be able to do the All Arms Comando Course, but, if i can while in the OTC, i will, without a doubt.

RM recruiting Officer I had an interview with told me to join OTC and not RMR, maybe I should have listened. Take away that maybe.

I would very much doubt you would be allowed to do All Arms Course, hope you do though.

If you were to do All Arms you would be daft to join RM! Why do all the crap stuff twice? Initial Training is only meant as a means to an end. Instead you might be better joining as Army Officer (Not often you'll hear me say that!) and joining 29 Cdo RA or 59 Cdo RE. As you've already got green lid you should be able to join them straight after officer training. That way you'd be attached to 3 Commando Brigade instantly anyway.

If they don't let you do All Arms you'll have better chance to getting into RM anyway. It certainly won't harm your chances.

Maybe ill skip the All Arms course then, and jus do that lot in RM Basic.

Why did the RM bloke tell you to join OTC as opposed to RMR then mate? Spose theres more leadership etc.

Not in the UOTC myself, joined the actual TA. Through I know a few the guys from Uni who are in it. So - doing the AACC - forget it. Best you can get is a weeklong session with 29 Commando.

Hmmm, Sorry mate, you seem to be building yourself up for a bit of a disapointment. Course`s (even for the TA) are bloody difficult to get on. If your lucky, or buddies with the CO, then yeah you`ll be able to get on what you want. If your one of the Scum (sorry Rank and File) like me, then forget it.

Being in the OTC shouldn`t prevent you joining Royal ( I`m no expert through - one of the other lads should put you right) Expect a bit of piss taking through.
What Uni are you starting at mate ? Have you thaught about the Royal Marine Reserve ?

I won't mention 29 or 59 Cdo again then, just an idea, if you ain't getting all arms course then it won't happen anyway.

Captain "abc" stated he thought it offered more chance of leadership training and that was more important. In all fairness he had been through OTC himself.

OTC doesn't have great reputation, one of the lads who used to be at RMR with me was in it and didnt' think highly of it. Folk going on odd maneourves when in harbour position and engaging in extra fizz activities in a bivvi

OTC can be a bit like a drinking club, I was in the RAF equivalent the UAS and it was tat. I left after 3 months as I couldn't handle the boredom/irritation. Probably would have got me few grand in sponsorship off the RAF as well, never mind.

I would advise against the OTC as you won't learn soldiering skills to a decent standard. You won't get the same kind of discipline to prepare you for regualr forces as well, eg the Phys and routine in the field

I left OTC to join the RMR and learnt more in 1st month at RMR than i did in 9 months at OTC, and actually achieved something in the process. You will not get on the commando course in the OTC, not a chance.

Many people at my unit have used the RMR as a route to joining the YO batch at Lympstone. It does prepare you well for what to expect.

The OTC is more of a drinkers club, most weekends we went into the field at 8 am saturday and came back at 6 so we could go on the piss. SUnday was recover from hangover day. Also many people were not serious about learning anything and would piss about in the field - In sum, a joke! You will have a better time with the RMR

Thats what I would have said. Recruiting officer with RM said the opposite.

I'm a crocked RMR Recruit, he's a captain in charge of recruiting for YO's.

Only probs with RMR is it doesn't always suit with uni work and timetables, a lot of lads can't pile on the training and so don't make it through, and you can get injured. Which them really does mess it all up.

I was thinking of joining UOTC when I go to Uni come September... not so sure about it though...

I am hoping to doing RM as a YO - but not sure if I can get fit enough!

Does any one know which would be better? RMR or UOTC? There seems to be somewhat of a debate occurring here!
