Hi all

I want to join the Armed Forces, and I am stuck between the Paras and the Royal Marines as an officer. Can anyone give me any biased views on to which one I should join??

Deep down you should know which one you realy want to join - if you don't perhaps you should look at joining something else

silly question really.

Biased reasons-
We're paid better (i think)
We jump from planes rather than wade ashore in cold water


Do you really want to spend your life in Lympstone?

I would think that parachuting in the rain gets you just as wet as wading ashore up the beach, in fact you'd be even wetter, all-over! (I don't believe we are going here!)

If you don't like getting wet, don't join either!

On a more serious note though, for a sensible question. Study all the information you can on both the Royal Marines, and The Parachute Regiment. If you cannot tell which you want to join after that, join The Parachute Regiment.

Yeah, you should know before you go for an interview or anything. If you tell a marine/para you're considering joining their rivals they'll wont even give you a second thought.

From my previous post :

For the 'wannabe's undecided to join the Bootnecks or the Paras, whay not consider serving with both via one of the Army Corps - RA, RE, RLC.

After completing P Coy (Paras) and the All Arms Commando (RM) course you could then achieve both ambitions.

As a plus, you could then post on this board when the bun fight starts about which of the two are the most elite - which seems to occur fairly often!

It rather depends on whether you paddling on the beach or an aerial view of the world, but when the shooting starts you are in the muck what ever you have joined.

perhaps doing a parachute jump might help youre decsion

If I had the benefit of this well informed site when I was younger, or maybe strolled down to the AFCO a bit more often, I'd have probably gone the Royal Artillery route and gone airborne by attempting the all-arms course.......but I didnt so now Im doing it with the RAF Regt instead.

I havent joined yet ( RCB/POC next year for me ), but the one thing I do know is that I have known I've wanted to be a para as long as I can remember.

From the training side of things, unless you have a definate mind set I think you'll find it very hard to motivate yourself enough, I'm talking when your really tired, or when your mates are going out for a few beers but your at the gym so cant.. very very annoying.

Everybody will have their own personal reasons for wanting to join a particular regiment, but there will always be that feeling deep down. That one regiment that gets your giri rising when you see them on the news, or hear about a major battle they have just won.

Step back, look at it from its simplest elements ie/ you wanna jump or you wanna swim.

Personally, I wouldnt have considered either force if I had had any doubts, a single doubt now will explode when your actually there training and finding it hard, it'll become a way out and you'll have wasted your time.

Perhaps contractors advice is the best ?

Whats wrong with a decent line regiment? Apart from being frustrated from watching Para/RM's being on the initial assault.
