Why are the SBS advertising in the Navy News?

i was just flicking through the latest issue in WH Smiths when i came across this HK-wielding SBS operator with his face blacked out, underneath was which:
"Interested in serving with the Special Boat Service? Contact recruitment cell on Mil: 93 884 2266. Serving members of the Armed Forces only".
so the Govt doesnt even acknowledge them by name because they're so secret and suddenly they're advertising in our monthly rag? whats going on?
sounds like either they're desperate or theres a new recruiting strategy in place.
can anyone of u learned ones explain?

Who told you the govenment dont acknowledge them by name? If you go to any libery theres books and books on them! there role in the falklands is being more and more documented with time as is SAS operations.
I would imagine they advertise there as its the paper most read within the RN
apart from the sport that is...

the govt does acknowledge that it exists but the sbs doesnt constantly blow its own trumpet like the sas does

Yes, I recall soooooo many official statements from the SAS saying how good they are ....

I hate these threads, suffering , as I do , from divided loyalties (no Artist, not another name for your anal problems). I suppose in the end the very fact that my Corps time was that period of my formative years from the age of 17, means I have a particular affection for the Royals and, I do feel that in my case the skills I gained as a bootie were what helped me in Chunky's Regiment. I did also get a fair bit of stick as I struggled to regain fitness for selection, being a Commando I was supposed to find it easy... it wasn't.

You may not have noticed, but I have a Globe & Laurel tattoo on my left forearm. So I know exactly what you mean.

To get back to the original question - The Navy News is a newspaper designed to be read by Navy personnel. Royal Marines - from whom the SBS draw the majority of their ranks - ARE part of the Royal Navy and those of them that can read, can then apply to join the SBS. I just hope that those who do apply can read - otherwise they are in for a bit of a shock!
I shouldn't be flippant about these things but when I read some of the questions it makes me wonder who is asking them!
