just got back from a training EX and we were doing mostly section and platoon attacks. someone mention we should do it like the British and only take a knee (we go to the prone) is this true? it would enable faster mov't which is vital, then again you provide a bigger target. I wish we had only taken a knee, my thighs are covered in about 200 puncture wounds from thorn bushes!! good ex overall though.

going to the Knee is better in my view, due to the fact of going prone can cause injuries from like you said, and going onto the Knee is better for being more manoevarlble (spellings f@#k) and also if you need to move quicker you can just get up and go...
Lying down also has problems becuase or getting into a suitable position to fire....just my thoughts though.

In open ground I have never only been down on a knee during a section attach, it's always been on your belt buckles. The army may only go on a knee, but the RM certainy dont!!

In a section attack you hit the deck, fire at enemy, crawl a couple of feet to the side then get up and run like a bat out of hell (well for a tackticle bound anyway.

Think about it boys, if you're on your knees'......you'll be on you back pretty soon, and taking no further part, you present yourself as an easy target. To only fo down on a knee would just be plain unprofessional.

*you may of course only go on a knee in a FIBUA/OBUA situation.

I thought it seemed a bit odd. Of course the ground dictates to a far degree, but to kneel all the time would seem to be a death wish! Easier on the body though, at least until the rounds connect.

Going to a knee seems like it would make you a bigger target in most terrain,and you have to train like you fight-if bullets are flying you want to be the smallest target you can be.Regarding pain and discomfort experienced while doing this I'll have to invoke the motto of the US army infantry training school at Ft. Benning Ga. 'pain is just fear and weakness leaving the body' have fun and drink afterward

Keep down. Lay low. They can't see you but you can see them. (ifen you is in a good position). Never forget taking the all arms commado course through section attacks. End of first attack lots of wet knees. John Mathison (WO2 in command) not impressed. He made them do it again and again until they learned. John's favorite word was SWAG (Scientific wild arsed guess!). Always stuck with me that one.

The basic's used to be:

Down, crawl, observe, Fire.
You would try to pick your position before moving,

Zig zag run and then drop down a few meters away.
Crawl closer to the final position - head up Observe the enemy.
Move (crawl) again (to stop the enemy laying sights on your position) - then weapon up and shoot, using the previous positions information on target location.

Has this changed?
