I now this has nothing to do with the army, But there must be someone on these forums who has suffered or suffering with them.
Was just wondering if anyone has any good tips preventing them before a run? or even getting rid of them. There a right pain in the arse!
Thanks

I thought it was more of pain in the ankle than the arse

For me it's simply a part of running.
Just as hang-over's is a part of getting hammered!!

No, seriously.
Make a lite warm up of the mayor musclegroups BEFORE running, and then make a 5-10 minutes strechout, BEFORE running!!
Sorry about all the wrong spelling too night..

Get some of those correctional insoles you can buy at boots mate. You'll find them uncomfortable for a few days, but you'll get used to them and they should work a treat.
I had a stress fracture which became a broken leg, but they're good for helping or preventing all kinds of lower limb injuries.
Cheers

Well if you say so, I'm no expert by any means, just my advice.
In this kinda trade your bound to pick up some kind of injury somewhen though, just how it is.

PS Asics trainers are really good, your buying a high quality running trainer rather than a brand name, so worth the money you spend.

Try building up your calf muscles, by strengthening them you'll help prevent shin splints.

During my time in the forces I never heard or saw any one suffer from any of these complaints. Or was it as kids we ran or walked every where we went as cars were as rare as rocking horse droppings. There was no television so every evening you were out playing sports of one kind or other.

Correct! Since the age of 16 I really done any physical training. But 3-4 months ago I started. Now these shin splints take the hoo hoo!
But im the only one to blame for not doing any physical exercise for 3 years.
Thanks All Some good advice

BillyBob - Shin splints from my experience can become a problem if you do a lot of road running and it is made worse if you decide to bang out a long run without stretching off properly before or after. It's like a repetitive strain of the same muscle group if you keep your running to straight line roadwork on a level surface. As part of your phys prep, include some off-road work. This will help strengthen ankles and use slightly different muscles on your lower leg.
The 'insole' info you've been given is more for people who suffer from flat feet and get shin splints. If you're able, try to do a little bit of cross country, through woods. jumping across ditches/fallen branches/trees, that sort of thing. Makes the run a little less tedious anyway but helps the legs build up properly.
You'll need to let the legs heal first and perhaps see the doc about getting some anti-inflamatory tabs to speed up the healing process. A quick Google will tell you a bit more on how to prevent it coming back.........
