From the telegraph
A 16-year-old boy has been shot dead in a crime-plagued Sheffield suburb, police have said.

The teenager, who has not yet been named, was found with a shot to the back of the head in a park in the Burngreave area.

He is believed to be local and to have been the victim of a gang feud.

Chief Supt Jon House, District Commander for Sheffield, said: "The young man has not yet been formally identified but specialist officers are with the family to whom we offer our sincere condolences.

"Offenders are believed to be local and witnesses are asked to come forward and speak to police officers.

"Any information will be treated confidentially and appropriate protection will be offered to witnesses who assist.

Police were called to the scene at 7.30pm yesterday and today it was still cordoned off.

Robert Smith, editor of free community newsletter the Burngreave Messenger, said tensions on the estate had spiralled during the day and that two hours earlier a number of shots were fired on nearby Melrose Place.

Police have sought to reassure people, pointing out that gun crime is very rare in Sheffield with only one other fatal shooting in the city in the last 18 months.

However, the community remains concerned and armed police were this morning patrolling the streets of Burngreave.

One shocked 52-year-old Burngreave woman said today: "This is terrible. Thing like this should not be happening in Sheffield. This happens in Brixton - not Burngreave."

Mum-of-one Lisa Webster, aged 36, said : "I haven't slept all night thinking about it. It's every parent's worst nightmare."
Truly shocking, what's this country coming too.

Whats truly shocking is that the Old Bill Oversight Commitee claimed that gun crime in the UK had fallen 5% between June 06 and 07.
Just who is your government trying to kid?

Lies, bloody Lies and statistics eh? :o

I don't think that'd help to be honest Tab.
Most gun crimes are commited with pistols and small semi automatics and automatic weapons.
Banning shotguns and rifles will only prosecute people who use them for a genuine good reason, plus I've never been clay pigeon shooting before and I want to go one day.

Yeah, also im sure most of the guns used by the gangs now days will be illegal with serial number etc filed off so there can be no trace. I was thinking more big e.g. The Death Penalty for murder (like in the US).

Now if it was a soldier that had been killed you would get a number of people saying what a waste it all is and that we should bring our troops home. Have you ever noticed just how quite it goes when some one gets shot at home, mind you it happens so often now it is hardly ever news

thats nonsense, the death penalty is not viable for ANY crime as you can never truly prove peoples guilt indefinitely as various historical examples have shown (see the docu 14 Day In May for example http://www.rsdepartment.i12.com/year%20 ... 20Days.htm )

Its alrite mate don't cry about it, I was only sugesting a way to scare people off doing these crimes in the future and I think the death penalty would do just that.

Well maybe you increase the life sentence. maybe you remove the possibility of parole maybe you increase the sentences for lesser firearms offenses. and just MAYBE you address the deeper social issues of poverty and education and the incredible apathy from the government to better poor areas with high percentages of poor ethic and black people.

Maybe you take the people who do these things and educate them so they stop....or maybe you solve a problem with mesures which really boil down to a draconian "eye for an eye" mentality which doesn't solve anything and is the same mentality with perpetuates the gang violence....

as a deterant maybe, but what happens when you are posed with actually having to implement it? i just think its already proven itself not to work so why entertain the idea?
