Just a thought ,whats the hardest assault course you have ever done, i found the one in the shot the hardest one ? may have been the smallest but what a ball breaker. Easiest one everv was when we were with the rangers in fort lewis, cant remember the training area but every bloke in the company beat the existing record, even the tanks who waltzed around as a group. One of the yanks commented that we were all hand picked and thats how we beat the time.

That was the same when some of 1 Para did there Heliborne course in Fort Cambell in 79 and all past leaving lots of there's in there wake, they said they had been "HandPicked".

Sorry 2 failed, one broke his ankle and one stuck it on one of there DS.

My worst time on an assault course is when we were made to do it in our gas masks. It felt that your lungs were torn out as you tried to get enough breath. If you pulled the gas mask away from your face then you got sent around again and again until you completed in the time by the staff and with out pulling it away from your face

I took 50 guys down to visit a Yank inf outfit in Yakima, Washington a few years back. Their CO had had 15 specially minted and hand-enmelled Regimental coins to give to his 15 top lads who'd come in the fastest on their so-called expert inf test. It was a bit of a joke. 12 miles cross country with a ruck. They had a thing called a "snivel bus" to take the floppers back to camp who didn't want to soldier on. Bless 'em.

Most of our lads just ran it to get it over with. Consequently, we took all 15 of those shiny coins and the CO had to present them to us in front of his bn (700+ strong). You could tell he was gutted. We didn't have the heart to tell him we'd out-shot his snipers all day with their own weapons. He'd have probably topped himslef!

Probably the hardest one for me was in depot doing a 7 mile tab on week 12 immediatly followed by 3 times round the assault course, and on the 3rd time round we broke track and did the steeplechase.

That was a lick.

Luxury!.We used to dream of respirators,we had to run around holding our breath,and if a PTI caught you breathing we had to go around again holding someone else's breath!
Of course we had it easy

Has anyone seen the Foreign Legion assault course in French Guyana?

There was a Documentary on the Legion a few years back and they showed them going over it and while obviously it's not something I've ever done it looked bloody hard!! Lot's of waist deep mud and obstacles both natural and man made. It's more of a team course than an individual course as without good team work you wouldn't be able to get over the obstacles.

They were saying that a unit from the 2REP held the course record which was something like 30min (but don't quote me!!) and the slowest was by a visiting unit of US Marines who took over 8 hours to get round it!!

The yanks probably really only took an hour, but I'd bet they took seven to conduct mission analysys, formulate courses of action, condut the decision brief to the commander and then develop his cosen solution. Either that or they had to wait for the Coke machine to be serviced!
