Interestingly when I was in Japan a couple of years ago, I went to World War 2 memorial garden in Kyoto. It commemorates allied soldiers in WW II not Japanese. Seems strange that Japan have not apologised formerly, as Japanese society clearly express deep regret. Must make it hard for their veterans, especially with memorials commemorating the enemy! After all if any of us had been draft age in 1943 and living in Japan what would we have done? An apology would venerate their own veterens as well as those like my Grandfather who fought for the allies in WWII in Burma and the Pacific.

It might still happen, every time the Japanese administration changes they seem to re-syntax their regret statement to somthing resembling an apology!

Now I was a Manager with a very large firm and we had a lot of men working for us who had been Japanese POW's. Now I did not know of a single man that that was able to work up to his retirement age before illness forced them to retire early and in every case it was down to their treatment by the Japanese. Now I have met many Japanese people and quite like them, but i can't forget the way the POW's were treated and how they still try and blame what they did on other people. Now I know they say it is not in their code to surrender and any troops that did surrender could not expect any thing from them, yet when they were defeated there were countless deals done with the Americans to save their own skins.

Fair do`s Tom. They are shit scared of having to pay any compo and this drives the way the Jap Govt acts. In OZ we do see Jap Vets and as said, fair do`s. That was their way. They gave themselves to the Emperor and considered they were dead the day they joined up. They left nail clippings and hair cuttings so the family had summat to bury.
There is in each of us a morality which dictates how we deal with each other. They had(and I stress had) a different morality.

A few years ago meself and another member from this site visited Combat Stress in Leatherhead. The blokes from Singers who had enjoyed the hospitality of the Japanese have no points of common reference with the rest of the lads in there. They are in their own world of experience. Looking into the eyes of men who are the sole survivor from a Btn who were starved to death, beaten to death, bayoneted, lashed with barbed wire and treated as less than human every single day of their imprisonment was humbling to say the least. These lads mostly forgive. Some don’t obviously and they hate the Yellow Bastards(their words) with a vitriol that has to be seen.
Any rapprochement with the Japanese has to satisfy these lads.
I think the Japs are waiting till there are no survivors left and Margaret Becket can say we’re all mates now.

Completely agree TAB and Harry H. Japan should apologise, I hope I didnt imply otherwise, If it comes down to compensatiion being the cheif motive for not doing so that is a disgrace. And I suppose inevitably when the potential claiments are no longer with us, it'll happen.
