Hi all,

I know this question is trivial but every time Wimbledon is on I find myself asking it. I always see servicemen and women dotted around the centre court and around the stadium and I was wondering why they are there? I don't watch tennis usually but whenever I watch any of it at Wimbledon There's service personnel there in uniform. I imagine they'd fight over who goes to the ladies' matches lol. I figure it's for security but thought I'd ask anyhow.

Following your question gtsco, the primary reason that i know of the Armed forces being at Wimbledon like other sports such as Lords Cricket matchs and Rugby cup matches is through tradition.
The armed forces have no power while they are there but they do act as a deterrent in any way you seem fit.
The position there is merely that of a steward and can be interesting in watching a few games from time to time.

Thanks for the reply, yeah I figured it was either for security or tradition. But today as I was going to post the question some guy ran onto the centre court and I think a few Royal Marines that were standing on the borders of the court apprehended him and took him away, Is the first time I've ever seen them being involved in anything.

Made my afternoon. Taa, muchly!

Tennis: Now there's a girly game for you. Prissy people trying to be altogether far to pretty (when they're not having their little hissy fits). Absolute twaddle!

Speaking of hissy fits: Now that England is out of the world cup, courtessy of Rooney's silly little melt-down that cost them the game, and the Krauts are GoneCon, who the hell cares any more? It'll just be a final between one buch of oil monkey's and another. In the Germany-Italy game, my Mrs commented: "The Italians are dirty players". To which my response was: "Well grease atracts dirt, you see." She made me clean up her iced tea she'd spat out. No peace for the wicked!

Tennis indeed.

This year was the 60th aniversery of the Service Stewards.
They get 65 sods per day for doing it , plus £10 per day for food, they only do Centre and No:1 court. Start time is 0945 for briefing and finish when ther court ends. sometimes 2200 ish
They have to take two weeks of their leave to do this, forms for this come out in Sept/Oct every year.
You have to find your own accomadation, some pitch tents , stay in TA centres and some club together and rent a house for the two weeks.
Loads of tottie & Beer
